So if you have a figure wielding a sword and a pistol which hand holds which? I am thinking the arm that is skilled in the use of the sword holds that weapon. So most likely the right arm. I have seen figures and paintings of Captain Souter with it in either hand. Thoughts?

I would use my strongest arm for the sword and weakest for the pistol as wouldn't need great accuracy for a close range shot. I would assume Souter would be ambidextrous to have sword and pistol in either hand.

I understand that Souter is depicted the way he is for artistic reasons rather then practical. I still wonder if there was some military training in this style of fighting. or if it was simply born of necessity?

If you look at the arrangement of the accouterments--straps and belts and what not--they were manufactured for right hand use of the blade and anything else went into the left (taser, pistol, tomahawk, etc.) Lefties were out of luck at least officially.

And the question is more complex for the green martian :ROFLMAO:

"Pokey Drills" are designed to strengthen the right sword arm of a cavalryman. These aren't needed for the left arm as as the constant use of the reins dose the job. I assume that as an officer he would be a horseman and would would have had similar training.

I think this depends on the era , if you are talking about a one shoot flintlock type pistol then yes use the left hand with the sword in the right hand and try and get a lucky shot in but if it's a later period with a revolver then I would have the revolver in the right hand and get off as many well aimed shoots as possible before switching over to the sword . Luckily for me I'm ambidextrous so I can make a mess as much with my left hand as I can with my right hand .
