Finished this one after I returned from Euro. He is based on a 19th century painting and is a conversion of the Michael Roberts "Old Bill" mannequin bust.
I reworked the eyes, nose, cheeks, ears and chin. THe rest is Magic Sculpt excluding the roache which are hairs from a cheap paint brush.

Hope you like him.

hello,
nice work, although the painting is not from the 18th century, but rather from19thc entury (1830 or so).
a bit more on Tah-Ro-Hon, as I believe this will add nicely to the fine bust you created
an Ioway (Siouan language family Native American tribe) warrior, important enough to join the Ioway expedition to Washington, probably in 1830, and put his mark on the treaty with the US in St.Louis in 1837. Interesting that on his King/McKenney portrait he has no bearclaws necklace as this seemed to be of part of the Ioway warrior outfit (as seen on the other Bird King and Catlin portraits).
A short history of the tribe can be seen on the Ioway Nation website:

a little story on Ioways and Lewis&Clark expedition

this lithorgraph is based upon the original painting by Charles Bird King who was employed by the US government (1820-30 or so) to paint faithful portraits of the Native leaders as they came to Washington to sing treaties with the US government.
a story on how those works of art came about cann be seen on the Ioway Nation website

or here, also a copy of the print.

A copy of an original litograph can be also seen

his signature is on the 1837 land cession treaty, can be seen on the Ioway Nation website

and also there

hope it helped a bit

Thanks Darius, I like a man who knows his subject. I can see a few more Ioway making it into my collection from looking at those portraits.

I appreciate everyones kind words, my ego has been sufficiently massaged.

Great work Stephen,
This is really a fine use of "Old Bill". I like the clothes and the facial mods.
I am working on a similar project with "Old Bill". I hope mine turns out half as good as yours.
Two thumbs up for this one Bulesking.

Hi Stephen...you are getting more inventive with every new conversion you complete...especially with the facial alterations...well done.
Surely a fully scratchbuilt head must soon be on the cards....??

All the best mate.

Roy.

VERY good Stephen ! (y) You captured that portrait quite well in a 3-D bust.

Just wondering - Is there a chance you'll convert another of these busts into a Sioux wearing an eagle feather bonnet ? ;) Now that would be spectacular !

I very much enjoy seeing the different variations people come up with for "Old Bill". I'm actually surprised how many have turned him into a Native American... when I first saw the face it screamed "fisherman!" to me, but obviously not to others.

Nice job.

Francesca
