I plan on using the techniques posted in this forum to paint tartans in acrylic. The issue is that I use oils to paint clothes and the figures are large scale. So given that I will be using oils should I first shade and highlight the base colur in oil then paint the stripes in acrylics and then use oils to shade and highlight them after or use acrylics to shade and highlight the stripes? thanks!

I would highlight and shade the base color with oils first. In fact its not a bad idea to overdo it a bit the the contrast on you base color bearing in mind that when the stripes will come this will be toned down. Then paint your stripes and highlight-shade them as well.Good luck with your project and keep us posted.

Why not just paint the stripes in oils since you're using them anyway? Acrylics will just give you headaches with their fast drying especially if you're not used to using them on a large surface (a curving one at that!) while with oils you have the ability to correct mistakes easily, long as the base colour is fully dried.

i,ve done quite a few kilts all in oils. One tip i do though is thin the oil with thinners and do every other line down first and let dry for 24hrs before i add the missing virtical lines, also if you go wrong they will be easy to remove
