I started this figure in about June 2005.... and well.... it's almost done....just a bit of weathering to do, but I thought I'd share it with you all any way...

This was my first adventure in several arenas, including medieval, painting mail, painting white....... and (the biggie) painting with oils!

Apart from the weathering I also still need to fix the eyes...

Apologies for the crummy pics.... I took them outside on a very sunny so had a bit of wash out with the whites....

BTW... I guess I've almost met my New Year's resolution.... complete at least ONE model in 2005!!!

Feel free to give criticism....

Looks great Rudi.........yes.....the whites washed out with the sunlight but the overall effect I like. Whats next on the workbench for you?

Rudi,
chain mail looks quite good, especially for your first time! The groundwork also looks good. I think the face needs more contrast. It looks a little flat in the pics. It could be the lighting to a certain extent. The shield is also screaming for something! A cross, some slash marks or something to give it some more interest. Keep us posted! :)

Hi Jay,

Thanks for the comments... I agree about the face - I over-blended and lost most of the contrast I had; my face painting still need tonnes of practice ;)

Regarding the sheild - I'm a bit stumped when it comes to shading, highlighting, weathering and giving some battle damage.... I tried to shade it, but it just didn't look "right" - if you know what i mean?

Any tips for weathing and painting battle damage onto shields will be much appreciated! :)

Rudi :)

Rudi, although I can offer no help or advice with oils (I paint in acrylics), I can say that you need more highlights and shadows. It seems that you have only 2 highs and shadows on each color. I wouldn't worry too much about it though. On some of my earlier figures you'd be lucky to see just one ! As far as the shield, just put a small red cross in the upper right hand corner. For shadinding and highlighting on this, just remember to keep the highlights towards the top and shadows towards the bottom. It'll turn out just fine, wait and see. Keep working on it and show us what's next on your workbench.
