I'm starting a large scale knight (54mm) and I'm going to paint some heraldry on the horses barding, his tunic and shield. I'm horrible at free hand painting like that. Does anyone know of a way to make a stencil in the correct scale so I can paint on the heraldry?

Thanks,

Victor

Hi Victor

What about getting the image , scale it down on PC then trace around it and then use the tracing on the shield as a outline

Just a idea !

Look forward to seeing the result ...is it for a specific knight ?

Stay safe

Thanks Nap. I thought about that but I'm not really good at photo manipulation thing.
The model is Pegaso Models European Knight XIV Century and I'm painting it like Giacomo del Tondo an Italian Knight

Vic, I have some self-adhesive heraldry stencil sheets. Give me an idea (pics) of what it is you're after and I'll have a look to see if I have anything that might work. If so they're yours free of charge.

This the chap Victor?

As Kev mentioned if you can find an image of the heraldry it can be scaled up or down to the right size easily enough and printed off (although a transfer is easier it's not quite so satisfying) If you are really struggling and have the heraldic image you need drop me a pm and I'll see if I can size it up for you (y)

Stay safe

Thank you all for your help. DaddyO, that's actually the heraldry I'm going for on my figure.

Here you go
I'm not sure what size you need the shield, but I'm working on a Pegaso 54mm knight at the moment so I used that as reference - hopefully if you print off this it should be the right size, but let me know if you'd prefer it in a different format. (Print it out actual size not to 'fit sheet' and it should be pretty close)
(I can't do anything with the flowers I'm afraid because of the distortion already on them, but if you can find the flower and let me know the size I'll scale it for you. Likewise with the shield I can draw it up, but I'll need a size first)
Cheers

Just a hint:

"Haraldry" is not some kind of ornament, but describes the wearer as belonging to a particular party, a "house" or as a follower of a particular leader.

In this respect, the badges on the saddle pad, the shield and the flag should match - and should not have different symbols.

If you have never painted anything like this, geometric shapes are very suitable...:

If you prefer certain colors, I would be happy to find a template that is easy to paint!

Cheers

Hi Victor, not sure that templates are going to make the heraldry any easier in that scale.
Basically with the exception of the lion, the crescent and the florals can be pretty easily achieved with circles.
Either using cutouts from electrical tape (handled to reduce stickiness) or simply drawing decent circles and working the paint from the centres. Crescent obviously two offset circles and the florals just a matter of working in some small triangular 'cuts' to create the petals.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the information. The person I'm attempting paint was a real knight and the above heraldry I posted is what was on his shield and on the barding for his horse.

Victor

Hi Del,

Thank you for the advice. I will attempt to free hand some of this but I'm usually not very good at free hand drawing/painting like that.

I should have been clearer about the tape. Cut an open circle and position accordingly, then add a small solid circle to give you the open crescent. Dab gently with a soft short hair (used) brush with a miniscule amount of paint left on it. Repeat if required until you're confident you can see the outline, let dry and carefully remove the tape. Then simply paint to the line.
What you can do is complete the background colour first and varnish to give you a cleanable surface if you make an error. Works best if you're using oils for the heraldry. Then when all is dry a quick coat of AK Ultra Matte will kill any shine.
Cheers

I have the etched set for roman figures. I'm just not sure how to use them.

They are cut out and glued on. The intro (right click to translate to English) explains this and there's a short SBS.

NIMIX-Heraldica medieval, Roman and Greek

NIMIX-Use heraldic photo-etched shields

As I understand it, some high status (parade?) medieval shields may well have been in relief (eg, see Black Prince's), but most battle shields would simply be painted on (I suspect ditto for Roman ones).... nevertheless, a useful add-on.
