Hi friends,

I've finished the crusader bust just now.

I took some pics, and started to do backgrounds with photoshop.

So here the first pic :

Keep take a look at this topic, as I'll update with some other view pics soon :)

I'd like to thx John Lea (United Empire Miniatures boss). He'll use my painted version to update the boxart.

And Luca, my friend, thx for every thing :)

Jean Paul it turned out really nice, sure that John will be very happy about your paintjob.

I know you prefer to make your background dark on the top and light on the bottom, but that way the (bottom) shape of the figure will be too sharpen. A trick to avoid that effect could be selecting the area near to the bottom of the figure (with the free hand tool) and cutting it after setting a fade value between 30 and 60.

Jean-Paul, just as Anthony writes, the eyes are very realistic and to express a state of mind. I also like the beard alot. I wouldnt mind a few tips from you in that matter.

Thanks for sharing this beutiful piece with us.

Cheers

Hello Friends,

thx for your comments :)

Luca : I'll try it, but I'm a realy newbee with photoshop......

Jannes : I highlighted every part of this bust that is directly facing the sun with the same color Old Holland Yellow Deep and some White. By that way, it give a good relation between all the parts.
I tried to thing about the light and shade as only one thing instead to paint every part of this bust separately. Take a look through your window (the real window of your house, not your computer window lol) and observe the lights and shades on walls, road..... they connect objects between them.... (hope you understand)....

Marc : I erase everything around the figure. Then I prepare a nice background, and testing diferent colors until I find the right one. And then I choose option of ocean and flou filter.....

Jean Paul,
this really turned out nicely! I really like the extra effort you put in on the lighting and shadow. Great stuff!

Ok, I know you learn (and paint) fast, so this little tutorial will cost you at least the painting of Doctor... ;)

Click on the free hand button from the toolbar and draw the countour (be sure you have selected the layer with the figure)

Ah, I forgot to mention, the Doctor must follow you at every show...

Now from the 'Selection' (?) menu (not sure, my photoshop is in italian), choose the 'Fade' (?) option

Try first with a value of 20 (I use from 5 to 60, depending on the effect I want to achieve)

Notice how the shape of the selection area will change depending on the used value

Press the 'Canc' button to erase the area near to the selection, this will give you a smoothed and faded effect. Every time you press the 'Canc' button, a little more will be erased.

And about the background (but this will cost you at least two more painting...), once done with the colour, try to apply the cloud effect (filter->rendering). Note that it will be affected by the current foreground/background colours.
Also you can apply (only to the background) the light effect (filter->rendering), selecting the background transparency option for the texture channel (see at the bottom of the dialog).

That's all, already started with the Doctor...? No...? Ah ! You slow man..., what are you doing wasting your time reading that ?!?!

Wow, so manythings to do. Will I have time to paint? lol

How can I get the tool bar on the top where I can press trhe "Canc" button? I dont have it....

I did a mistake with button's names..., I meant the 'Del' (delete) button of the keyboard, 'Canc' is for the italian layout...
