Dan Morton
A Fixture
Although this two volume set was published in 2006, I didn't even see it mentioned by the online book-sellers until last year. At the time, the online prices started at about $275.00, and all that was visible was a front cover. I was recently able to see one in a brick and mortar book store and was totally knocked out! These are both exhaustive and thorough and lavishly illustrated. First class reference works!
The French Army in the First World War - to battle 1914: Uniforms - Equipment - Armament, Volume 1 (Hardcover)
by Laurent Mirouze (Author), Stephane Dekerle (Author)
978-3902526090
This volume even has numerous color photos of the many, many test uniforms that the French Army tried out but turned down before the war.
The French Army Volume 2 In the First World War - 1914-1918 Uniforms - Equipment - Armament (Hardcover)
by Laurent Mirouze (Author), Stéphane Dekerle (Author)
978-3902526205
This volume has the most thorough coverage of the Colonial moutarde khaki uniforms I've ever seen anywhere.
The prices have recently come down quite a bit. I got what I thought were reasonable prices on each and grabbed 'em! If you are interested, I can e-mail you some interior pages of each. If you are in the market, I would take a look at the availability and prices and wait until you get what you believe is a reasonable price. There aren't that many used copies available online, but if you keep an eye open...
All the best,
Dan
