After seeing Daniele's thread showcasing his work here I decided to make the plunge and spend some euros I didn't have in a mini I didn't need but really did want. This is my first limited edition miniature purchase, so I'm as excited as one can be.
After a short wait for my country's customs and some hefty import taxes, I received the mini
Packagin was sturdy and everything inside came with no problems whatsoever, with a nice handwritten note and a few paragraphs talking about the concept:
The figure consists of the genie body (plus the adorable monkey), the carpet+genie's hands and a the boy, totaling 8 pieces.
Casting quality is great, with very few mold lines and in places that are quite easy to clean and that do not show up much, like the inside of the genie's forearm. The sculpt itself is great, with nice facial expressions, a good sense of movement and neat details like the fingers wrapping around the lamp's handle.
There were few gaps to fill, one of which i probably won't need to touch (on the back of the boy) because it'll most likely be hidden from the main view angles:
The biggest issue seems to be the carpet+hands. I don't know exactly what might have cause it, but I think the piece might have warped inward, displacing the connections enough that i had to use hot water and i'll have to add putty to the hand gaps and the smoke swirls near the genie's belly.
It is a bit frustrating BUT it happens in the least important area of the mini.
After gluing some pieces I ended up with 3 components I'll paint: the flying boy with his lamp, the genie+monkey and the carpet.
I primed everything with a mixture of Ammo/MIG One Shot Green primer + a bunch of black ink (I don't have a black primer) followed by some passes of diluted white ink creating a zenithal effect.
I think the piece has a strong composition focus with all 3 faces creating a nice little triangle. I tried making this whole area the brightest to help me think about the color scheme I'll go for.
So far I'm quite happy with the overall quality of the piece, considering the issues are easily resolved and do not affect a major part of the piece.
I need to think hard about which color scheme I'll use to capture the energetic and upbeat playfulness of the piece. I hope I'll do it justice!
Also, I managed to convince 2 friends from discord to purchases this same piece so we can do a paint-along. Between March and May we will all paint this same piece, sharing our progress and encouraging each other to do the best we can!
Cheers
Lucas
