“But a smell shivered him awake.
It was a scent as old as the world. It was a hundred aromas of a thousand places. It was the tang of pine needles. It was the musk of sex. It was the muscular rot of mushrooms. It was the spice of oak. Meaty and redolent of soil and bark and herb. It was bats and husks and burrows and moss. It was solid and alive - so alive! And it was close.
The vapors invaded Nicholas' nostrils and his hair rose to their roots. His eyes were as heavy as manhole covers, but he opened them. Through the dying calm inside him snaked a tremble of fear.
The trees themselves seemed tense, waiting. The moonlight was a hard shell, sharp and ready to ready be struck and to ring like steel.
A shadow moved.
It poured like oil from between the tall trees and flowed across dark sandy dirt, lengthening into the middle of the ring. Trees seem to bend toward it, spellbound. A long, long shadow...” ― Stephen M. Irwin, The Dead Path

This is my take on Galapagos Miniatures The Messenger bust, there have been some excellent versions of this on here, so I thought I'd give it a more Pagan spin and used the Green Man as an inspiration

There is a little bit left to do on the owl around the legs/feet and parchment. But it's done to all intents and purpose. The base is one of Chippy's and fits perfectly with the look I wanted 20140525_155813.jpg20140525_155832.jpg20140525_155851.jpg

Hope you like him and if not please tell me why not  As ever all comments welcome. All Acrylic apart from the orangey brown on the owl (Oil)and the gold and silver (enamel) the
Thanks

What a clever idea Steve....very dramatic.
I can imagine it being lit from below with a small LED.
You could look at running some ivy up from the base around the trunk and onto the shoulders to link up with the ivy on the body.
Smashing
Cheers

Thanks for the comment Marc I didn't think it would be everyone's cup of tea and I'd rather folks were honest, may I ask what exactly you didn't like ? Del brilliant idea I might look at a little light box under it and at some ivy too thanks mate (y)

Cheers Steve frankly having seen what some of the really good artists did I thought stuff that and went for the easy way out

Looks Great Steve, green seems to be a bit of a theme at the moment as I've just started painting one of my figures in a ghoulish green(y)
Best wishes, Gary.

Hi Steve, I love your ingenuity and originality. If I may I'd like to make a few observations and suggestions.

Perhaps you could borrow some ideas from the makers of the LOTR movies when they made the character of Treebeard, which is analogous of the Green Man. They used trailing lichens and mosses for the beard and hair and added fungi and leaves to his skin/bark to create the impression he was composed of living materials. They also coloured his eyes a deep amber to reflect the deep pools of sap within his body.

Green Man is not just an English pagan character but has been represented in many northern European folkloric tales for almost 2,000 years. He is typically a pagan character imbued with a deep and powerful natural spirit; not necessarily benevolent or malevolent but generally feared and mistrusted by everyone except druids and other spiritual folk. I'm certain that Green Man was in some way an inspiration for Tolkien's ents in the Lord of the Rings.

I'd change the colour of the owl from white to a dappled brown to make them look more compatible and natural. The white owl somehow doesn't look right with the green man, whereas a barn owl would seem more natural.

Thanks folks your thoughts are appreciated as ever, Tony the owl is painted more or less as a Barn Owl but with slightly more exaggerated colours to give it a slightly unreal feel, adding fungus is an intriguing idea which I might have a go at. Heres some pics of the owl which might help clarify

Hi Steve,

If you are feeling really adventurous, some accounts refer to him having antlers which resemble branches. Now theres a challenge...!

Very nice idea with this bust(brought out the hippy in you:)). One suggestion I have is that you could highlight the eyes with a slightly lighter green:)
Cheers

Steve! ..This one caught me off guard! the concept is great, I never would have thought of this ! ( I also have this piece) ! I tend to agree with Del, and Megroot! If its to be the, 'Green-Man',.. then some tie in with foliage may well come in handy ! this piece has the beard and all the makings for it. e.g.

Mark
