A Fixture
This Diorama depicts the execution of Untied Irishman Henry Joy McCracken on July 17th 1798 at High Street Belfast. McCracken had been the military leader of the United Irishmen in Co Antrim and one of the founders of the movement. He commanded the rebel force at the disastrous Battle of Antrim on 7th June 1798 where the rebels attacked the town but poor co-ordination and planning lead to their defeat. McCracken had gone "on the run" but was eventually recognised as he attempted to board a ship to America and following his trial (where he turned down an offer of clemency in return for information), he was hanged later that day. It was reported that when his sister was lead away from the gallows Henry Joy stood and watched her until she vanished from view , then he tried to address the crowd but couldn't make himself heard - so stepped forward and put his head in the noose.
The model depicts Mary McCracken leaving her brother (at his insistence) and Henry Joy watching her go - minutes later he would be dead. It consists of a couple of Metal Models civilian figures, a Rendel Patton Light Infantry Officer and the remaining 6 figures are made from Historex parts. The coffins below the gallows are scratchbuilt. Painted in oils through out.
