I recently completed this representation of Italian WW1 fighter ace Francesco Baracca from The Model Cellar, sculpted by Mike Good. Initially a cavalryman, Baracca used the prancing black horse (Cavallino Rampante) as his emblem, when he became at fighter pilot. His first aircraft was a Nieuport 17, which I've also build as part of this project (Italeri 1/32). On June 19th 1918 Baracca was killed in action, and after the war, his mother presented Baraccas emblem to the promising young Italian race car driver, Enzo Ferrari, whom later made it famous through his automotine company.

Having painted a number of large scale busts, this is just my third figure in this scale (along with two pieces in 1/35, which of course comes close in size), som I'm pretty pleased with the result. But, man! it's difficult, and there's still lots to learn.

Nice piece of work old chap (y)
I've done one of the Model Cellar pilots myself and really enjoyed it. Fascinating to find out about the origins of the prancing horse emblem too (Little gems like that really make my day):D

Cheers
Paul

ps - Is the Nieuport yours too?

Jacob,
That looks great. I really like the leather effect you achieved on the coat and boots. And your aircraft build is excellent too. The subtle weathering and oil streaking looks great. Now put the two of them together and take some pics of Francesco by his aircraft =).
Thanks for sharing
Paul

Hi Jacob

Can't go wrong with the MC figures or indeed busts ( one of this man as well ) , like tge leather coat and the uniform colour which can be awkward to get okay

As Paul say put them together , lovely work on the plane , nice weathering you've achieved and with interesting info

Why not enter a piece into the class of your choice in our May's FOTM comp and also vote in Aprils classes as well

....And enter in Vignettes & Diorama #3 which will be running till 31/12/21 with voting till 31/01/22

Msg me if needed

Always good to see the artwork

Thanks for sharing

Look forward to the next

Happy benchtime

Thanks for all the nice comments. I really appreciate that! I completed both the figure and the Nieuport kit as a commission job for a dedicated Ferrari-fan and collector og Ferrari-models and memorabelia. Thus, the following pics of the aircraft and pilot together are not mine, but was sent to me from this guy. As you can see, the models are now housed in a custom-built display case with items that tell the story of Francesco Baracca.

@Nap: I'll seriously consider the FOTM comp.

Hi Jacob,

That display is really cool. A very nice collection !
I see that portrait of Baracca with his officer's cap, right there in the middle ...nice and prominent. Did you know (or does your client know) we make a 1/12 bust patterned after that exact portrait. Sculpted by Mike good, it is a fantastic likeness. Maybe your client would like to add it to the display ? =).
...or, we have it with a bare head:

Hi Jacob

That's a fine display telling the story , love the detaiks on the plane and alongside all other items looks great

The MC bust would make a great addition as well , you could have him bareheaded with the cap alongside

Thanks for sharing the details

Look forward to seeing your comp entry

Happy benchtine
