Could've, Should've, might still take this a bit further.
But for the moment I'm calling this done. All in oils.
Castle Miniatures magnificent piece. Not one for the timid but a real challenge that delivers no matter your skill level.
The 'treasure chest' might seem a bit much but it's a bit of a nod towards a piece from years ago called The Sack of Rome by Jim Johnston (I think) using a pair of Julian Bennassi figures.

Much appreciated guys.
A really absorbing project that needs a bit of careful planning to get the fit right.
I've kept the colours fairly muted and 'campaign' in style but you can pretty much go full rainbow and still be within historical accuracy.

My only personal reservation with the figures...not your painting I might add...the standing guy would be better posed if he was looking at his victim...just my personal opinion mind.

Tend to agree Ron. The othr thing is the face on the prone figure is outstanding so a bit of a pity it needs to be picked up to clearly see the sculpt quality.
Perhaps Castle might consider using it for a future release.

This is also my concern about this otherwise superb set. The reason is apparently that the standing guy has also been released as a stand alone figure, but in the vignette it is a bit odd that he has a kicking opponent under his foot, but is looking not at him but somewhere else.

Hey Derek,

First, top notch execution of this piece. I, also, liked the muted colors which ties this brutal scene together.
Second, regarding the look of the standing guy, I beg to differ with you gentlemen: Whether intended by Castle Miniatures or not, it creates, at least in my perception, the feeling of an arrogant winner who is totally indifferent to the fate of his adversary and even teases and try to taunt the viewer about it. Totally mesmerizing in my mind (and the reason I would probably never paint this piece, it will give me the creeps!)
