What a magnificent addition. Australian colonial military history is one of my favourite subjects. I'll be getting this for sure.

Here's a selection of pics of the NSW Mounted Lancers uniform from period portrait photos, museum displays and illustrations.

For those of you unfamiliar with the NSW Lancers, here's a brief unit history.

The Royal New South Wales Lancers were formed as the New South Wales Cavalry Reserves in 1885, designated the New South Wales Lancers in 1894, and created Royal in 1935. The Regiment sent a squadron to fight as mounted lancers in the South African War, takes the traditions of the 1st Light Horse formed from its peacetime members to fight in the First World War at Gallipoli and Palestine, and fought as a Tank Regiment in World War II in New Guinea and Borneo. The Regiment with 21 Honours is Australia's most decorated unit, it is currently an Light Cavalry Regiment in the Australian Army Reserve. The 1st/15th Royal New South Wales Lancers (1/15 RNSWL) is an Army Reserve Light Cavalry Regiment within the Royal Australian Armoured Corps located at Parramatta, NSW.

Tony:

I've always envisioned the NSW uniform to be brown. However, looking at the last photo, would the khaki uniform have generally been a range of colours dependant on the cloth lot? I've seen this argument before about the reality of khaki in British uniforms being a general term for everything from a greenish tone through to brown

Cheers

Paul

I always thought the uniform was a light khaki rather than brown, as shown in the photo after the paintings and colourised photos, yet Nap's photo shows it as a brownish colour . Be worthwhile checking it out.
