The Sargeant.... Dolman Miniatures

As with all historic reference materials, the colour of the uniform is affected by the quality of the fabrics and dyes used, which varies over time and from man to man and certainly between officers and enlisted men.

The original full dress tunic below (from the Australian War Memorial official collection) is what the bust is wearing, so I'll be using this as my guide when it comes to painting

Black rooster feathers rather than emu plumes is correct.

Many thanks for the links Tony. The variations due to dye colours makes sense.

They did wear black roosters feathers as did many of the NSW mounted units at that time. Only the Queensland Mounted Infantry wore emu plumes prior to the Great War. When the 3rd Light Horse Brigade turned up with them in Egypt this caused quite a ruckus with the Queenslanders protesting vehemently that only Queensland regiments were entitled to wear them. Not all LH regiments wore the emu plume - one sees films, statues and models of the 4th LH Regiment of Beersheba fame with emu plumes, but it was one of the regiments that didn't wear them during the Great War.

Yes Chris, the emu plumes were a matter of some considerable pride to the Queenslanders but were eventually adopted across a number of units in the Light Horse but not all. Even some of the English Yeomanry requested permission to wear emu plumes in their helmets as a sign of their affiliation with the |Light Horse during the campaign into Jordan, but the request was knocked back by the British High Command.

When asked what the plumes were, the story goes that some smart ass said they were "Kangaroo feathers" and the name stuck.

I have contacted the Lancer museum and was advised that the puggaree on the slouch hat and the bash is of modern design and style. The actual puggaree is very similar to the ones used on the slouch hat of the 1st AIF. As was the bash.

It's interesting to hear that Queenslanders were the ones first whining, NSW have been doing a lot of that the last 10-11 State of Origin series !
