Workshops and Seminars
SCAHMS is proud to have had some of the world’s most talented artists as presenters at past shows. Once again this year, we are pleased to offer a workshop in the basics of painting “flats” guided by award winning painter Penny Meyer. Class size is limited so contact Lars Liljeblad at (949) 829-0742 or by e-mail at [email protected].
The flat painting workshop on Friday March 18, 4-6pm at the SCAHMS California Show. We will be talking about glazing over the gray scale under painting as well as aspects of color theory.
Please bring your paints, a flat or regular figure that has been in progress, brushes, etc. A little lamp is also a good tool, we will have power strips and cords.
If you do not have a flat, I will have a printout of a gray scale painted flat and you can participate by painting on the printout.
The cost of the workshop is $20.00. If we are having fun and want to stay later than 6pm, we can do that.
You can pre-register for the workshop by contacting Jim Hill or Lars Liljeblad (there info is at the bottom of this column) to insure you a spot, or register at the registration table at the show. if there is space available.
Our seminar on Saturday will be presented by internationally recognized modeler and artist, Anders Heintz. Anders will be giving a talk about sculpting figures at 11am.
SCAHMS will be holding an event new to their California Show this year - "the Procrastinators' Project." We will have tables set up outside for participants to try finishing that last-minute project in time for next day's judging. The event will begin at 3:00 pm on Friday, March 18 and will continue until 12:00 pm the next day.
The requirements are:
1. bring all your own materials: paints, brushes, figure(s), lamp(s), etc. What will be of particular need are power strips and extension cords.
2. be willing to answer questions and accept comments from spectators.
3. have a great time painting with others.
There is no pre-registration for this event since table space will be available on a first-come first-serve basis. However, if we see the need for more tables, I've been told that more can be brought out.
This is the first time we've held such an event at this show, so any constructive feedback is more than welcome. This is a trial run for this event, so there will be no special award. However, if this event proves to be successful, then there may be one or more in the future.
If you have any questions, please post them here or contact me via email: captnpete at cox dot net.
Vendors
A large vendor area is located adjacent to the exhibit area. 6 foot tables are available for commercial or private use as well as for promoting organizations and events. Tables are $50 each for the entire show. For more information, please contact Kim Calvert at (714) 280-9807 or by e-mail at [email protected]. Make your reservation as soon as possible because space is limited.
The Grand Auction
At each SCAHMS show, the club hosts our Grand Auction. It is so named because it features the work of some of the most acclaimed artists from around the world. The figures are donated to SCAHMS for the express purpose of supporting the show and club. We greatly appreciate the generosity of the artists who will be donating their work this year.
If you would like detailed information on the Grand auction, including bidding by proxy, please contact Bill Horan at [email protected].
SCAHMS is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of miniature modeling. Yearly membership dues begin at $17.00, with additional benefits available at higher levels.
Monthly meetings are held on the second Friday of each month, from 6:30pm to 9:30pm at the La Quinta Inn 3 Centerpointe Drive La Palma, CA 9062 ( Just off the 91 Fwy. take "Orangethorpe" off ramp). Turn North onto Valley View from Orangethorpe. Centerpointe Drive is a west turn off of Valley View.
