Time to start my next challenge and it will be a challenge....

Tsar Nicholas II and his two eldest daughters Grand Duchess Olga and Grand Duchess Tatiana

Here we have the superb resin flats from Mil-Mart Miniatures very nicely sculpted by Ken Farrar.

These have featured on PF before very nicely painted by Roger Newsome (Billyturnip) way back in 2013 https://www.planetfigure.com/threads/nicholas-ii-olga-tatiana.59249/ Not an easy act to follow.....

The detail is very nice on these

A quick wipe around the edges to remove the very slight flash and a wash then primed in Tamiya grey using an airbrush.

Then traditionally mounted on cardboard ready for painting

A real challenge Graham. Flats are an entirely different game, one I have never truly been comfortable with, but not for lack of trying however. Still try one once and a while. Good luck with yours. Look forward to seeing your progress.

Certainly is a different game, you are right. I think though that not only are they a valid and interesting format, they do demonstrate, in someone like me who is trying to develop skills, a progression of technique even if the flat does not turn out as well as I would like, I will see if I have moved forward in skills. They do require a definite technique to get really well done though.

Hi Graham

I was wondering what ones you had got , I have been tempted by these But ...they have legs ...albeit mostly hidden !

All credit to you for developing skills it's certainly paying off

Look forward to seeing these develop and progress

Happy benchtime

PS ..I see medals on the Tsar !

I agree completely with you Graham. That is why I keep trying.

Yes, medals........ when they are ready, I will send the Tsar over for you to do the medals :ROFLMAO:

Here is one from Ken at Mil-Mart that I primed up at the same time and he doesn’t have legs ;) Not sure what you thoughts are on a flat bust :sneaky:

Hi Graham
I am a great admirer of anyone who can paint a "flat" to a good standard. I have tried the genre several times with little success. I think it is all in my mind really. The techniques are understandable but I think I lack the patience. I have one flat in my cabinet, painted by Gerry Larkin, who is a master of this genre - I often look at it and think "could I do that?" I think I know the answer!:(

I shall watch your progress with interest

I also admire flat painters........ sadly, I am not one of them but I would like to be:D However, I only paint for fun so I will try my best to get them reasonable but so long as I have fun doing it that is all that matters to me. If it looks good, it’s a bonus :D
