As with all scandals, who knew what, and when?

We all know there's been loads of chicanery and fiddling going on in all kinds of manufacturing for years. And the motor industry is not alone in this.

I gather it's become de rigeur for manufacturers to post emissions figures to place their cars in favourable tax bands.

I suppose the bottom line is, when does stretching the truth for marketing become an out-and-out lie?

Start a new company.
In the first year sell 1 product.
In the second year sell 2 products.
We have doubled our sales in 1 year.
Buy from an ever expanding company.

I'm not entirely sure where the myth that diesel is cleaner that petrol came from. Both fuels emit equal amounts of nasties, but to quote the AA,

"Bear in mind petrol cars take around a mile to warm up. Once the engine's up to temperature though, a petrol engine is cleaner than diesel, and gives out lower emissions – better for the locals. So, if you do frequent short journeys where the engine barely warms up, then a diesel could be better. If, however, you spend most of your time stuck in traffic around town, then a petrol car's best."

Hobson's choice, it would appear...!!

I think that the VW issue comes down to greed, ultimately, IMO.(y)

!!!!!!!!
According to american authorities , they have a software able to detect polution test an able to falsening the test

!!! What ???
I have a diesel, every year in Belgium there is a control, mandatory, of all car . For detecting emission of fine particles, there is a sort of tube they put in the exhaust, and push as hell on the acceleration to make the measurement . How can you fake that ?
Even if there is a software to detect the test running, it means that automaticaly it reduce the emission !!!! What, a sofware that can do that, why not full time ??
When I went to the test and was rejected for to hughe emission, second time, the same . Then one of the guy told me, go on the speedway max speed allowed, low report, hight revolving speed of the motor ( something nobody in his right mind do ) then after 30Km come to the test, don't stop the motor, keep it warm and "hop" it's done, you pass the test . So go poluting at maximum motor rotation speed to be able to pass the test .

And if there is a software able to do that... than explain it to me

And don' tell me a SUV or any monster car they like to drive ( Californian are so found off ) are less poluting
Lobying to kill the biggest competitor on the market ?:D

Ah! I can answer that one!
Apparently the software in the cars can tell if the car is being tested in a lab, or on a normal road or not. I believe it does this by realising it's not being driven normally because in a lab it is never being steered and the brakes are never used and there is nothing going to the shock absorbers etc. At this point the car's on board computer recognises this and goes into 'emission testing mode' or whatever they choose to call it. In normal conditions the car is in 'fuel economy mode.'
This info comes from an engineer I was listening to.

I drive old bangers, personally.;)

I have to admit that if then can make the emissions low to pass a test then they shoud do this for all time. Anyway it's maintenance and setup that counts. I confess to being a petrol head but I love motorbikes a lot more than cars. Anyway my choppers are 19 and 17 years old and as I pamper them I reckon that they are not only cleaner than most vehicles but economical as they are properly set up and maintained! Who needs on-board computer stuff...

Not being wealthy as we need a family 4wd off road vehicle for my wife and daughters to tow horse boxes and to use on farmland means I have a more modest vehicle - a 15 year old VW Polo which I bought for 700 Sfr (£450) from my eldest when she bought a much newer car and have since spent a little time and money with repairs and servicing, new brakes (around £500) and it's now tested for 2 more years, is rust free and I enjoy it anyway. So I'm in the banger brigade at present (y) but there are three cars I want to have for a short time before I'm too old: a Ford Focus RS (4wd version coming soon) as I used to compete in rallying at a clubman level a long time ago, a Ford Mustang as I love muscle cars and a Porsche as I think they are wonderfully engineered but at the moment Polo serves for all three and yes i can drift it when I want to...

VW’s “defeat device” is not a physical device but a programme in the engine software that lets the car perceive if is being driven under test conditions - and only then pull out all the anti-pollution stops. “Clean diesel” engines cut emissions through techniques such as adjusting air-fuel ratios and exhaust flows, and in some (though not most VWs) injecting a urea-based solution to render NOx harmless. When running normally, requiring greater performance, VW’s controls would not operate in the same way.

When in doubt ask the ex top gear team,Im sure they mentioned a while back about desiel emissions.
