Hi all

I was thinking of giving oils a go on the Sovereign bust I have in front of me, I am ok for mixing flesh tones but need a little guidance for the uniform colours.

Anyone got any basic mixes for Khaki and Khaki Drab in oils.

One other thing is it a simple case of adding white and black to create the highlights and shadows or should I use a light and dark version of the base colour.

Thanks for any help with this.

here`s a formula i have for khaki: mix ivory black, titanium white, viridian, yellow ochre and burnt sienna. for hilites add more white and yellow ochre and for shadows add more black to the basic mixture. generally for hilites and shadows you want to use colors other that black and white( will look dull). as a simple example, for green, blue in shadows and yellow in hilites. it`s pretty simple for the primary and secondary colors. when you get into the blues and grays, it gets tougher. there`s also the issue of painting something that`s black or white. i`ve gone to library and checked out books on oil painting, color theory, etc.. that has helped and i also take notes on various techniques. hope this helps.
