Tommy’s War have treated us to no fewer than five new releases since Euro Militaire, you may well remember the first of these that i reviewed here with the amazing Clyno Vickers Motorcycle and Machine Gun Combination.
Well today its the turn of one figure from two that have been designed to work in conjunction with the motorcycle, namely the awesome looking Sergeant, Motor Machine Gun Corps, 1917.
I have included below an achieve photo showing a recruit from this famous Corps of men. However I have no intention of giving a history lesson here as there is a huge amount of well detailed information regarding just that which can be found on the internet. There is also a brief but informative account that can be found on the Tommy’s War website.
(photo below)
Archive photo of Lieutenant Herbert Frederick Bolton of the 103rd Machine Gun Corps died on May 3rd from wounds sustained during the Battle of Arras.
First Impressions.
Presented in the familiar and stylish boxing the resin pieces are kept safe and secure inside the box by way of clear plastic re-sealable bag. All of the pieces were in first class perfect condition with no damage or missing parts. The box itself shows a full colour photo of the completed figure on the front with a description of the contents while a smaller photo is used on the reverse side with further written details.
The Kit. This is a full resin figure kit consisting of four individual pieces requiring assembly and painting. The resin itself is of superior quality retaining very well indeed the detail from the original sculpt during the casting process. Very little will be required in the way of clean up and assembly will prove completely straightforward and unproblematic.
Head.
(photo below)
The superbly detailed head comes as a separate piece. I would recommend the use of a good quality resin saw as a way of removing from the casting block, clean up will be straightforward enough.
The Brodie helmet has been beautifully sculpted with the highly distinctive motor machine gun corp badge looking superbly well defined on the front, the strap looks equally impressive with great detail on the buckle and the strap itself laying naturally across the face.
Anatomically the facial features look perfect, as for the individual features such as the nose, ears, mouth eyes, chin etc…… just breath-taking as to how much realism has been captured in this sculpt. Its often easy to forget when seeing this detail examined in macro photography just how small these figures are, yet the level of detail involved just gets better and better!
Badge of Motor Machine Gun Corps.
(photo below)
A genuine cap badge insignia of the Motorcycle Machine Gun Corps, so distinctive and recogniseable. Very well represented in awesome detail on the Brodie helmet of our figure.
Brodie Helmet.
(photo below)
Looking at this fabulous example of the famous Brodie Helmet below and you are able to see how well it has been captured to perfection on our figure.
The main body.
(photo below)
The figure comes almost complete with only the two arms and head to assemble. The quality is instantly recognisable as Tommy’s War with so much amazing detail that can be appreciated from the moment you remove the pieces from the packaging.
Seen wearing standard 1908 Pattern uniform and accessories that we shall look at in greater detail below, the pose is excellent and practical enough so that the figure can be used in any number of scenarios.
With the figure retaining so much detail in those individual pieces of equipment its best we look at each separately …….
Map case.
(photo below)
In this photo is a replica map case very similar to that seen on our figure being worn over the front left hand side of the leather jerkin. Excellent attention to detail in all areas of the canvas material, particularly with the excellent undercut to the opening flap with metal stud button and the strap going across the front and back of the torso.
The main body reverse side.
(photo below)
Viewed from the back and the figure is still showing plenty of quality with high levels of exquisite detail. What I really like here is the straps for the webbing, binocular case and map case. The way each lays across the other and the uniform is perfect and completely in keeping with stunning raised features. As we shall see shortly the trousers look fabulous and genuine in appearance while the leather jerkin, leather gaiters and boots are equally impressive.
Britches.
(photo below)
A genuine pair of WWI britches as worn by our figure, superbly portrayed adding further superb detail. The very natural looking folds, creases and lay of the material on the figure looks first class and totally realistic.
Leather Gaiters.
(photo below)
A wonderful example of leather gaiters from the period, the ones on our figure look equally impressive, once painted in leather effect with the buckles in brass they will look utterly fantastic.
Leather Jerkin.
(photo below)
A genuine leather jerkin as portrayed on our figure, this wonderful example is on show at the imperil war museum London. This is a real standout feature of the figures clothing with excellent justice being done in its sculpt and appearance. It will prove a joy to paint aiming to simulate the leather effect.
(photo below)
Seen from this angle and the individual pieces of equipment continue looking highly impressive. Most notable here are the leather holster with revolver, leather ammunition pouch and the canvas gas mask bag. Lets look more in depth at each….
Gas Mask Bag.
(photo below)
Seen here is a superb example of the canvas gas mask bag as worn by our figure. Draped around the figures neck and secured by webbing straps just as it would have been in reality the level of detail is sublime. Superbly undercut on the opening with metal studs well defined the webbing strap looks very good especially with the buckle detail.
1908 Pattern Pistol Webbing.
(photo below)
The genuine 1908 pattern pistol webbing seen below is a fantastic example and shows very well indeed just how accurate it has been captured for our figure. Both the leather holster and the ammunition pouch look superbly impressive on our figure.
Leather Holster and Revolver.
(photo below)
A genuine WWI 1915 brown leather open top holster for Browning Mk.VI.455 service revolver used by machine gun crew. Not only does the leather holster show great realism on the figure part but the revolver grip seen protruding from the open top also looks fabulous.
(photo below)
From this angle we see well the leather compass and binocular cases. Individual features on each have been captured to perfection matching well with the genuine items.
Compass Case.
(photo below)
What a stunning genuine example of the military compass and case as seen on our figure. Worn on the webbing belt, front right side, its another fantastic sign of the sheer quality and attention to detail seen in Tommy’s War figures.
Binocular Case.
(photo below)
Here we have a beautiful and authentic leather binocular case correct for the time period of our figure. Every piece of the exquisite detail seen in this fabulous example has been reproduced in stunning detail for the figure.
Arms.
(photo below)
The arms come presented on the same casting block, removal and clean up should prove straightforward and with those interlocking pins to attach to the body fitting will be precise.
Leather Gloves.
(photo below)
A genuine pair of WWI motorcycle leather gloves, wonderfully detailed and with such distinct features, captured to perfection in resin for our figure, another fabulous feature.
