Hi all. I just stuck my neck out and purchased 3 Tommy's War figures without first doing any homework. I'm curious as to the quality of these and how they assemble etc. Am I in for any surprises as the box art photos seem to imply nice sculpts? These look to be awesome figures but should I expect to change the heads out to Hornet heads etc? Also, has anyone a magical oils recipe for the uniforms?

Thanks in advance,

Gary

I don't think you'll be disappointed Gary. They fall together, clean castings.
I believe Mars yellow and black gives a reasonable khaki.

That are stunning figures Gary and as Carl said, you would not be disapointed.
These are my colors for the english khaki.
mix burnt umber and yellow ochre with white. Do you whant more green khaki for the webbing then you can mix some seulaen blue trough it. Voor een wornout color more white.
For the highlights I use more napels yellow.
If you whant a more green color, I use a tip fir green to the first mix.

Some members of my club bought some Tommy's at Euro.
From what I have seen, the sculpt is very good. The cast is crisp and beautifull.
I guess you won't be dissapointed.

Thanks Carl! I'm such a knucklehead! I actually asked about this same mix last month and Colin Fraser was kind enough to post his mix on his Tommy's War thread.

Thanks Marc, I was thinking of seeing if I could paint them as Canadians which if I remember right the Khaki was a little more greenish than the British uniform.

That's what I needed to hear Patrick! Thanks!

Hi Gary
Just run off a few shots of one of the latest figure given to me by Darren at Euro Militare show. I am in the process of doing reviews on theses kits but thought these quick shots will help you make your mind up about the quality etc.
Very nicely cast with minimal clean-up and good level of detail, this one even has the photo etch straps in the box.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Tommi

Wow guys, thanks for the information and pictures! Tommy, they look to be excellent crisp sculpts by someone who knew what they were doing! I like the idea of PE in the kits to give them the added third dimension.
I bought the dispatch rider as well Marc, but not the motorcycle as I'm not very well versed in that level of PE. I look forward to seeing what you will do with it.
I'll check out your link when I get off work Carl.

Thanks again! (y)

Again, a crying shame that we are separated by 200 miles of cold western prairie , as I have recently completed the dispatch rider, engineer officer and the Douglas cycle, and you could see it in person....if you can come to Chicago next week:( Actually I am going to be in Calgary tomorrow, but will be travelling with a group for one day of Professional Development work at the UofC, so carting figures around won't be an option for me. Still, Let me add to the consensus that these figures are top drawer stuff, and I hope to be able to bring a collection of them back from Chicago, if the vendors there have the foresight to stock these gems.

Yes the Douglas kit is magnificent, I have one sitting here with its photo etch wheel spokes and very small and fragile detailed resin parts, it’s a real piece of engineering and looks stunning once assembled and painted. Here is a picture of the one Darren had painted up on the Tommy`s War stand at the Euro Show. Sorry for the slightly blurry photo, my wife took it:whistle:
Cheers

Also, has anyone a magical oils recipe for the uniforms?
Huge variation possible here: darker and lighter; some more brown, others more green; etc.

I'd recommend various mixtures of yellow (or a yellow earth), black, red (or a red earth) and a little white if necessary. Very easy to vary this in one direction or another. Sorry no magic, just basic mixing principles :)

I always recommend searching for reenactment groups in you favourite search engine. I find the reenactors really helpful and you can really get a feel for uniform colours. In truth, there is no single colour reference as production of uniforms was in a wide number of factories and without the quality control we would expect today, also there was no 'colour fast' so dyes would fade pretty quickly.

My personal thought is to get the colour as close as you feel but to enjoy the figure. I use Vallejo English uniform and highlight and shade accordingly.

Thank you for all the comments, the range has gone from strength to strength, I've got some great plans for 2013. Euro next year is looking quite spectacular!

I meant to say thanks for Tommi for placing the Douglas image here. This, and the figures, we're painted by PF's very own Carlos and it is simply stunning. I need to speak to Carl and get some photographs of it, but I will get them online soon.

Hi Gary
The mix i use for khaki are:
3 parts Black
2 parts Yellow
1 part Red
8 parts White

Once you have the basic mix from these ratio's you can shadow and lighten just using the different ratio's,hope it was of some help (y)

Thanks again everyone for the help on this. Looks like I have some options that I can experiment with. I'll give your mix a try as well Brian!

Gary

Gary don't be frightened to paint trousers and jackets in different colours of khaki if you want, no two bits of kit ever match exactly even now there are variations in uniforms even if they are issued together

Sorry to highjack the thread, but I have both a comment and question. First the comment, I only have one Tommy's War kit at present, but plan to purchase the rest as they not only fit a niche, they in general some of the best sculpted and cast figures on the market. Now the question, I know that they are marketed as 54mm: but, are they true 54mm ie closer to 1/32nd or closer to 1/35th? I need to know so I can do a conversion I have in mind.

Hornet 1/32nd heads fit perfectly, so I'd would say they're dead on for 1/32nd.
