Tommy's War Naval Rating

A fine bunch Dan.
Generally, Thank you guys for all the info posted here on this thread.
I am planning a figure of my grandfather who served in the RN on a number of ships (7 in all) during WW1.
I spent weeks with the Great War Forum trying to get this tally details for men who served on a variety of ships with no success.

Dan - thanks for the photos, they are very helpful. Interesting to see the canvas webbing instead of the leather.

Well as promised. I've not painted a figure for getting on for 5-6 yrs and boy have I lost the knack.
The head will be going back into the oven cleaner as I really must improve it.

Your figure looks like it has a hodge-podge of equipment. If it is meant to portray the RND going into Belgium early in the war that would be appropriate. This set of photos shows 1903 leather and canvas gear mostly. The ammunition satchels on your figure look older than that. Oliver pattern 1889?

Nice work Peter, if that's you after a long time out of the hobby then you're going to be one to watch! I have just looked at your blog and you're doing some stunning aviation art.

Dan, the webbing on the rating is 1901 naval accoutrement pattern, although you are correct in the fact that the Naval Division was sent to Belgium with any kit they could find. There are even accounts of a school suppliers sending the Navy satchels which were issued to officers as map cases. I've tried to reflect this with the ratings mix of kit and giving him the older Long Lee Enfield.
