toning with acrylics?

Could someone explain to me what colour I woudl use to tone down stark contrast. I don't need specific colour but do you use teh base colour to tone. hope this makes sense. How dilute should it be almost transparent?

When I tone (rarely) I use the base colour or 1 shade darker. In faces I do tone with reds, oranges and purple colours. i think I dillute about 95%, it's really like coloured water. I use several of these thin layers till I get the effect I'm looking for.
