Hi Einion, the primer is great, I'm just not used to this scale I think as the surface is very rough, it looks as if the sculpting hasn't been finish off in some places...
That's not directly tied to the scale, that's Carl's style - you can see it quite clearly in the product pics.

I'm also wondering how to approach the painting as the folds in his facial hair/skin are so deep, its just I'm not used to this scale I think,
Yeah this takes some getting used to, especially if you're accustomed to very small scales! One of thing you might do is study photos of painted busts and see how the highlighting and shadows are done, try to replicate what you like. Then it's a matter of practice to get a handle on it for yourself.

If you have an AB you could do a lot of the shading work with it (zenithal spraying), leaving just the refinements to be done by brush, followed by the detail painting. The masking and unmasking can be tedious, but you get used to it eventually.

If you're painting by hand, in case it's not obvious: use big brushes! Good rule of thumb to use the biggest brush you can to paint something, which in this case might mean a 6 or even larger.

Back to the spray white for highlights (from above). If you decide to do thatand are using any oils, it may be obvious but thought I'd mention that I take pictures after lightly spraying the lighter color so that, as my acrylic undercoat covers the highlights, I can still reference where the highlights hit.

Good luck, its a wonderful piece to paint...hint hint Santa.
