There is such a preponderance of trumpeters seen in the classical military prints. Their uniforms certainly deserve it, but did they have any special status within their units? Were they just another Joe Schmo soldat? By status I don’t just mean actual rank.

a sorta neat piece...trumpeter was used to communicate and would be alongside commander ..hence in napoleonic time often had both uniform and horse being distinctive..and of course when part of military band would have fancy dress..aside from Joe Schmo trumpeter had to play the instrument, and had more active role than say drummer- often drummers might be young boys, and didn’t have the same role in communicating.
