Hi guys
I wanted to present my latest work here. It's a 100% scratcbuilt diorama. Albatross, sailors and boat were made over the last 7 weeks.
To give a bit of not really necessary background, it's Russian PT boat three days after the mine in 1904.
thanks for viewing
Nico

some big pictures at this place: tsushima-2.
Thanks to my colleague JBA for hosting that dio till I have my own place.

hi Nicolas,

Via your link I also checked out the other master pieces. Mind-bogglingly beautiful creations.

Just have a minor icky point to raise: the likeness of the sea gull could be better. I used to be an unfortunate neighbor to pest-like sea gulls for years and this miniature doesn't do enough to make the association. I am sure the improvement will be an effortless one considering your cababilities.

Otherwide top of the league stuff.

thanks for the early answers Carl :)

thank you for the nice words Michael! Actually the dioramas on the site are the ones from my colleague JBA who is close enough to what I am doing but a bit different. He lends me the place at the moment.

About the seagull, well it's not a seagull but an Albatross, here are the kind of reference i used.
Those big beasts come in various shapes, but I choose the rather angular subspecies like on the top left:cool:

Oh I see, Nicolas!

Pardon me! I take back the sea gull comments. In this case a rather satisfactory likeness indeed!

I love many aspects of this work of yours. Genius!

Stunning work. The water looks so real, almost as if you could dip your finger in it. Excellent!

Wow..very impressive...and some nice imagination and creativity. Special props on that!
What did you use for the water? Just beautiful....

Nice work! Something different! Great composition, love the effect rendering of sea shape -you really captured a sense of motion with the subjects bobbing in the sea.
What water effects did you use? And please share the recipes regarding the layers of paint buildup in between the layers of water. Really top shelf stuff here!

Nicolas, superb painting and effects. I was nearly seasick looking at the heaving of the waves, incredible stuff. (y)

Cheers Ken

AWESOME !!!!

Nicolas, my friend :D !
Firstly, a BIG WELCOME to the "planet" ;) ! I'm really glad to see your presence here on this GREAT forum for figure modelers. Like I mentioned on "armorama", AWESOME stuff, my friend (y)(y)(y) !!!! May you post more here in the near future ! Cheers !
Kenneth :).

thanks for the extra compliments Michael

thanks JBurch

thanks Phil, i used Gedeo Epoxy water -easely available in Europe. I think in USA people can find Envirotex which sounds like the same product. It doesn't smell once dry, doesn't retract and doesn't produce heat

thank you Steve, okay if I understand you well, you want to know how I built up the water? well first layers was almost opaque and I managed to put a darker shade on the side opposite to the bird. As the resin layed on a flat surface i got no problem in the blending being too strong.
Then I put the diorama on an angled surface so that I could put in 2 times a dark and a light layer each on its own corner -you can see that i wanted to create a "direction of the light" thing with that diorama. Then I sculpted some waves in plaster and made a form about them where I poured some almost clear resin, then blended those waves on the water surface with yet another coat of resin, hope this is clear enough:cool:

Thanks you Ville!

Thank you Mark, however and despite obvious common points that's my colleague JBA who did the other dios ;)

Thank you Hardy, thank You Ken, thank you Diego

Happy to see you here and thanks for the welcome Kenneth friend

Danke Stephan, yep that's the point of this dio, trying to do a good technical job so that even the guys that really know about painting n'sculpting can dive into the story instead of searching for possible failures :)

thanks once more for all the comments, that's really pleasing
JB

That depends Stephan.
When it comes to ambiences, everything from Friedrich to Greg Crewdson, when it comes to the themes, Goya's horrors or war.
Actually, i am inspired by Death. Not to litter my dioramas with brainless dead people which i would find inelegant, but I feel more like those well adjusted people that need to put a skull on their desktop to be reminded of where it all ends.
One thing is sure, everytime you will see a diorama that i did, there will be Death lurking in one corner.
