Well, this is a question which has been "agonizing" me for a while now ...
Many of you may have heard about the 1st Batallion, The 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot at the Battle of Waterloo, and that at least their Grenadier company had French knapsacks at Waterloo, which the regiment originally captured in Egypt years before (around 1800 or so - this is quite possible, as a good French calfskin knapsack would have been a treasured item with a possibility of a long lifespan, the men would look after it carefully and never put it off even in battle).
Now, the Debra Raymond figure - ex-David Grieve - represents a soldier of the LIGHT Company, and no, it isn't possible to paint it just as a Grenadier, because fe. of the differences in lace detail around the "wings" of the jacket (yes, Light coy and Grenadier coy did have different wings !), so my question is : did the Light company of the 28th at Waterloo also have these French packs (as in the figure) or not ??Apparently, the most important witness who left a written description of these knapsacks was Captain Cadell of the Gren. coy ... he described a parade of the 28th after Waterloo when they were inspected by the Tzar of the Russias in Paris; by that time, some sources say Cadell was interim CO of the whole regiment (the Colonel had moved up to brigade rank), so could it be that at that time he spoke for the whole regt., including the Light coy, when he mentioned "our brown calfskin packs" ???
So what do you think guys - did the 28th's Light company have French knapsacks strapped to their backs or not ?
I await your replies !
Thank you,
Johan
