Osprey just published this title, written by Thomas Hoff and illustrated by Adam Hook. I'm not normally a tremendous fan of Osprey books, but this one, I think, is pretty good. I haven't had time to read it in detail, but one of the things Hoff did was take the experiences of several doughboys and compile them into a typical US draftee, "Kurt Schnieder" and use him to tie the text together. Since these books are written for a wide age range, including pre-teens - good idea. In his intro, Hoff tells the old joke about the sentry on duty at night and the 3 Entente soldiers:

"Halt! Who goes there?"
"A soldier of the King."
"Advance Englishman, to be recognized."

"Halt! Who goes there?"
"Soldat Francais."
"Advance Frenchman, to be recognized."

"Halt! Who goes there?"
"Who the h*** wants to know?"
"Advance American..."

But the illustrations are really nice! They show many useful uniform and equipment details and would be useful for figure-making. The illustrations show everything from the stateside 1917 uniforms and equipment to the 1918 versions combining British and French stuff. And the cover of the book would make a fantastic 4 figure diorama.

All the best,
Dan
