i will be doing a us sharpshooter 2 nd division sharpshooter at gettysburg the 2 nd day. i will be using vallejo paints can anyone help me please.

By 1863 possibly the only item remaining that might have been green was the cap. At this point in their history the sharpshooters were entirely or largely in part wearing the standard federal uniform.~Gary

From my reading there is not a single contemporary account to support that Berdan's sharpshooters wore the green uniform at Gettysburg. All of the issues of uniforms were up in the winter camps up to March 1863. During the Chancellorsville campaign soldiers recieved only random issues as needed. With the before mentioned campaign and the Gettysburg campaign looming not long after, soldiers were in all liklihood wearing out uniform items at a rapid rate, making it doubtful that new issues of the stereotypical green uniforms were forthcoming from the quartermaster's department.

After 1862 the sharpshooters wore the standard blue uniform when in the field. In September of 1863 a large amount of green clothing that had been formerly turned in was distributed in the Autumn, replacing the standard blue uniforms that had been worn before and during the Gettysburg campaign.

Check out the following site as there may be more information found in addition to asking questions on their forum.~Gary

Here is a link to a picture of an original uniform. I would think these may all be separate sharpshooter uniform items grouped together to form a single uniform.

Here's another, may even be the same uniform.

Below is a photo I took of an original sharpshooter forage cap that is in the Gettysburg visitor's center. You can see how the color varies from one original garment to the next. Also of note is the 3rd corps badge on the top of the cap.

Gary,
I don't doubt you, but I find this very interesting (haven't don't the research), because if you look at a number of recent prints by various CW artists they show the USSS in their green uniforms at Gettysburg.

Matt, That does not mean they're accurate. I guess it's just like beating to death the notion that the Confederates went into Gettysburg looking for shoes, even though elements of the ANV had been through there 2-3 prior.~Gary

someone should write osprey publishing and tell them that one of their illusrations in their book on us sharpshooters- us civil wars is wrong because the illusrator has green uniforms for this unit in gettysburg.

Well, the book is already published. I'm sure the writer provides some information to the illustrator in terms of what the plates will be, but the responsibility does not just rest with him/her. I'm inclined to think that a vast majority of those illustrating American subjects (or others for that matter) are not very knowledgable about the subjects they are illustrating. Given that, if accuracy is your concern always try to consult more than one reference if possible. ~Gary

Good Morning;try with this colour:base coat :a mix of military green,70%,a touch of prussian blue, and the rest flat black and flat earth;now, the decision is for the highligths, more green or dusty tones?.In combat, the later is the right;by adding sunny skin tone,or khaki grey the effect is achieved. The shadows with washes of flat earth and black;with good documentation,is easy to obtain the desirable efect. For more clean green, the first highlights with deep green and less flesh tones.Jose
