Hi,

I'm about to use a gloss and matt varnish on a figure, and I would like to know if it is needed to mix with water or you apply directly from the bottle? I'm using the Andrea varnishs.

Thank you
Pedro

In addition to the flow improvement Carl mentioned, thinning with water allows you to control the degree of gloss in the case of that varnish. One coat get X degree of gloss, two coats X +, until you have the gloss you want. I have never intentionally thinned matte varnish except for attempts to make it less than dead flat so I am not sure about the above working with it.

Thank you for the opinion Steve ;) I finish right now to put the gloss where I wanted and it was like you sad, more coats=more gloss. Now I'm going to use the matt. The dark vallejo colours have this satin effect that everyone already knows, so it will become handy. Just one question. Can I paint over the varnish... To add some dust for example??

You could always use a matting agent that you mix in the paint I use Tamiya X21 but you only need use a small amount else it goes a bit chalky, that saves you doing another coat handy for if you have fine detail or use a small scale figure
