After several months of work and many ups and downs, this one is finished. The inspiration was Leroux's painting "L'Enfer", the two French figures are by Nemrod and the German casualty is by Tommy's War. There is a full SBS here if anyone wants to relive this journey: https://www.planetfigure.com/threads/verdun-1916.601391/

I would like to thank everyone who gave encouragement and advice on this one. I nearly gave up at one point and I'm glad I didn't, because I think this has turned out pretty well. It was a lot of work, and I think I will stay away from subjects involving water for a while!

So glad you persevered on this one Nigel, because it has turned out really really well!
The waves are suitably subtle and effective and the water fits perfectly with the muddy surroundings.
The whole thing breathes WW1, perfect!

And the toughness of the journey should boost your sense of accomplishment, I hope!

Fantastic piece Nigel, so pleased you continued after the set backs because this is just so good in every respect. It's been a long interesting journey so many thanks for the education it has provided.

Cheers Simon

Thanks very much everyone, your support really is appreciated and you all helped me to get it over the finish line. That's what I enjoy about this Forum, the interaction is very helpful and informative.

Thanks Adrian, it really does. It was quite a journey and I would have been gutted to bin it, as these are definitely the best figures I have painted so far.

Thanks Simon, as they say - every day is a school day! My key lesson learned is to practise new techniques before you commit to the finished product. And that's another thing I really like about this Forum, people are prepared to share the different stages of their projects which I find very helpful. I have learned so much since I've been on here and also I get inspired by what other folks do.

Well worth the effort, Nigel, thanks for not binning it!
Fwiw, I think the water is spot on, likewise the ripples.
Well done you!

A superb end result here Nigel, gotta be happy with this setup mate!
Especially liking barrenness & calm before the storm mood this evokes.
Thanks for taking time to bring us on your journey.

Thanks Mike and Eros, it has been quite a journey, it ended up ok and I'm glad you enjoyed the ride....

Not sure I still feel young though Eros ;)

That is some mighty dang fine work, and you pulled thru the difficulties with style, as expected. Awesome work, Nigel. Ruck On, Bby!(y)

Outstanding work and very inspirational. There are many great looking WW1 figures but I've never painted any. After seeing your work, I may have to give it a shot soon.
