This is what I’m working on at the moment.

This is Verlinden’s 120 mm resin Viking warrior. While I was starting assembly my wife wandered into my workshop and commented that the base that came with the kit was boring. So since the figure seems inspired by an Angus McBride painting, I decided to try making a longship base.

I unfortunately didn’t take any pictures of the base during assembly. I have a chunk of balsa in the base. I carved the figurehead and prow from basswood. The decking I am also making from basswood. The curved planking is bent from 0.8mm plywood.

I have lots of work left to do on the base but it is turning out well. I am not sure if I want to stain it or paint it.

Some progress. The figure is primed. The pesky seams at the shoulder are blended in ok. I used 2 part silicone mold putty to make a texture stamp of the mail. This was pressed it into the epoxy putty at the seam and it has blended in ok.

The shield was way too thick. I carved out the hand and sanded down the piece to about half its thickness. I made a new handle from styrene and reattached the hand. A strip of foil, some primer, and now it’s ready to go.

On the ship, the deck planking is finished. I spent several hours going cross-eyed adding the clinker nails/rivets. The outer nail heads are 1 mm half pearls. The inner washer and bent over nail points are bits of styrene.
