Mike,
Welcome to my world.. I was a professional musician whom has to resort to playing part time.. due to downloading ..a lot people just take music for free off free download sites (ie ripping off).. not exactly a figure topic..but I can relate to earning a living from a craft..and getting ripped off!!
A lesson in this, if there is one(that I hear from peers..) is at least I had the chance to earn a living w/ an artform (even if for a too short of a period)
A lot of people dream of getting to a level where they are sought out by others... I just think it is pretty cool that I can chat online with a guy whom is a huge influence in the hobby and to me as a painter/modeller.. hope this helps lesson the annoyance of seeing ones work being abused...

And I even got to meet Mike and had a chance to work with him. :D

Mike,
Do you think that Verlinden is promoting its sculptors to use old parts
to speed up the process?? The head reminds me of the old Verlinden
figure you made: the German Office with a long fur coat and PPSH.

TS

Hi guys,

When will you be working together again? In other words: when will Mike sculpt another masterpiece so Taesung can make a perfect cast for us to buy and paint?

Gino

All over the last years, there seems to be no endcontrol at Verlindens... There pass so much crap figures, I could cry! Where are the good ol´days, when Verlinden stuff was permanent on my want list. And know? You can take his figures no more serious, but those British Paras are ridiculous. And for the mutated hand of the German soldier: I can use them in my Monster Lines!

Hello Taesung,

I don't think that Verlinden is promoting it per-se. Having done some few pieces for Verlinden, I CAN say that sculpting for Verlinden is not a bad thing professionally speaking. What Verlinden does do, galdly however, is supply bits and pieces from his older kits to make up new models.

My friend Brian Stewart did this all the time with Verlinden. He actually got it down to a science as to how to pump out the most "new figures" with the least amount of work possible! Brian never did his own heads. He purchased a pile of them from me over the years and galdly resued anything Verlinden could supply him from his huge backlog of stuff. So, it is quite possible that there are any number of Verlinden 120mm figures out there with my old heads, hats and helmets from the Kirin days. This applies equally to Warriors as well. But, with the exception of the original heads I sold to Brian, NONE of my 120mm parts that have appeared on Verlinden figures are authorized. I did not do ANY figures for Verlinden in this scale!

But I have to say that my old work from those Kirin days has been spread around rather generously at this point. All of the proprietary armature parts I did, including shoes, torsos, hands and such have all been duplicated and redistributed by Chris Mrosko at Warriors for his stuff. So, guys like Bill Chilstrom and and Anders Heintz, among others have been using my armature parts for years......

They say that imitation is a form of flattery. So, does that make plagiarism a compliment? Or does it just cheapen your efforts and make an old pro like me sound like a grumbling curmudgeon?

BTW, that German Officer figure you mentioned is not my work, but a figure by Brian Stewart.

Cheers!!

Mike

Hello Mike
Sorry if I brought up a subject that you rather not be reminded of. :(

BTW, that German Officer figure you mentioned is not my work, but a figure by Brian Stewart.
I mistakenly assumed that it was done by you judging by the head...

Mike,

At risk of poking my nose into something that I know nothing about, I wanted to say thanks for your post. The 'part-recycling' practice that you note is fairly obvious in products from many manufacturers. It's frustrating as a consumer, but its especially interesting to read your take on the practice as a sculptor - particularly that in even the most blatant cases, its is rare for any form of approval to be sought. It makes me even more focused on supporting the real manufacturers.!!

BTW - I too would love to see another Mike Good figure through Alpine. A truely formidable combination!!

regards,
michael

Me, too! :D

As for the part recyclings by manufacturers, it is understandable from
my point of view, a manufacturer. Sometimes, sculptors ask for more
money if they have to sculpt heads and equipments, which doesn't
make much sense to me.
But as a sculptor, it is something that one should eventually grow out of,
especially using heads and hands made by someone else.

Hello Mike,

I can quite understand why you're feel dejected.

In my book, it's only natural that a professional sculptor sculpts his own piece, without resorting to parts done by others. Call it 'professional pride' if you like.

But hey, what do I know? This is a brave, new world!

Cheers,
Quang

Feeling genuinely sorry for Mike.

Verlinden used to be the leader back then ... and now seems to be a caricature of itself.

From a makers point I see no problem using an original hand once made to be used again on another figure. Even if a sculptor uses parts he made previously and which fit the project I have no problem.

But Verlindens "I don't care about things like anatomic believeability" shoots them in their own foot. Check out the latest plastic figures by Dragon Gen2 or relative newcomer Miniart. Much cheaper AND much better!

I've only completed two commisions so far with two more in the works and made everything by myself although it is very tempting to use available stuff, especially if it's so much better than the own work. I even had a talk with a possible client who told me " ... don't be so stupid to do it all from scratch. No one will notice anyway."

However for me learning and understanding is a crucial point in sculpting. While I shamelessly soak up as much information as I can, the manual part I do all by myself and that gives me a little pinch of pride.

I often produce crap and still have to change things often but usually by the third or fourth attempt I have something presentable :D . Much better already than when I started out.

I can see both sides also. Reusing hands, guns, equipment, is one thing, but heads/faces stand out. If a bunch of figures have the same face it just doesn't look right, and then there is the issue of anatomy and how a body looks or should look. Verlinden has been dropping the ball in both situations from my stand point on about half of their new releases each month. I used to buy a lot of verlinden but it is rare anymore. There is so much more out there that is original and well done. I would take fewer high quality sculpts over more crap any day.

Recycling and being a professional sculptor

Okay, I have again opened a can of worms.

I am not asking anybody to feel sorry for me. I was just whining about something that has been a perennial problem for me. Am I really mad or angry about this? No, not really. Does it bug me from time to time. Certainly. But once I whine about it, it is all water under the bridge. So, I guess you guys have been slightly victimized by my belly-aching.

I am a full time professional sculptor. In this little section of the business, the pay is just enough to get by. So, if I am to make sure the bills are paid on time, I need to make the most of my time and efforts. This means cutting corners. If I can reuse a head, hand or, especially weapons, then I have saved myself a good chunk of time on my efforts.

Does that make me a "cheater"? Nope. That just makes me a wise user of my limited resources to get the most mileage out of my efforts. Does this somehow "cheapen" the end product for the consumer? Not to my mind. But then I am not the guy buying the products either. Recycling of repetitive, time consuming bits is just good business sense for me, and often the producers of figures as well. And if I am recycling parts that I made myself, then the work is still all mine anyway, so what's the beef?

Once a producer has a line of products, he essentially has a backlog of proprietary bits and pieces that can be reused to make new prodcuts more economically both time-wise and investment wise. Verlinden is one producer who allows his "sculptors" to recycle old bits and pieces. Why not, he paid for them!

The problem here is unathorized reuse of old parts that I made many years ago. That stuff is out there. Most of my stuff that was used by Brain Stewart over the years was paid for by Brian, or I simply gave it to him for nothing. That was my choice. But, between Verlinden and Warriors, this stuff has taken on a life of its own and reappeared in the work of people who I don't even know. These bits were created by me. Some other joker is getting a free ride off of my efforts.

Yeah, it bugs me. But that is just the nature of this business. Any sculptor worth his salt will eventually have his stuff ripped off in this business. Just ask Taesung or Quang. That is just the way it is. It is part of the price of being in this business. There is not a hell of a lot one can do about it but whine and kvetch when you see it happen. Then, forget about it. It will happen again. It is only a matter of time. So, being bitter about it does not pay. But whining does make me feel a little better about things......

So, would you guys like a little cheese with that whine?

Cheers!!

Mike

P.S. Yes, Taesung and I have discussed doing another project together. It will happen sometme later this year. By the way, I think the pieces that Taesung and Pangsatorn are creating are every bit as good as my stuff. Just my opinion.

Hold on there a minute Mike......

Hello Taesung,

So, guys like Bill Chilstrom and and Anders Heintz, among others have been using my armature parts for years......

Mike

Actually not so Mike, You supplied me with some armature parts back when we were doing work for Kirin. And Mrosko supplied me with a few of the same pieces that he had when he was working at Warriors.

I still have some of them, but unfortunately they were too big to use for 1/35 scale figures, so I designed my own 1/35 scale armature and that is the one that I use.

Anders Heintz has visited me many times and helped himself to parts from my stash, he probably did take some of your 54mm armature parts and he may of used them on some of his 54mm projects.

My 1/35 scale armature has been cast by the thousands by both Verlinden and Warriors and distributed freely to sculptors (Brian Stewart included) for their projects. I have freely given away many armatures to sculptors who ask for them, in an effort to keep things in a common 1/35 scale.

Its never bothered me a bit.

Bill

Hey Bill!

Sorry Bill. I was talking about the 120mm figure as seen at the beginning of this thread. And, my comments about armature parts is out of place here. I, indeed, did send out a lot of armature parts in the Kirin days. Point taken.

What I was really talking about here is not the armature parts so much, but the heads, hats, shoes and other bits that have gotten a lot of "circulation" over the years. The hat on that Panzer Officer is definitely one I sculpted. The head could be one of mine as well. I don't know who did this figure, but it was not the same person who did those parts. I did. And that anonymous person has gotten a free ride on those bits.

So I get a little bothered when this happens. I am sure that you would feel the same way about this. It's nice hearing from you!

Cheers!!

Mike
