I use oil paints and I rarely use a darker black than Mars Black. For his Dolman and Pelisse I mixed Mars Black with ochre picking from the darker to lighter mixes of this blend as appropriate. The Mirleton and Flamme used a slightly greyer mix of mars black and unbleached titanium to suggest felt.
Just as an aside, Black as we know it wasn't a dye at this date so the colour was created from various other mixtures of coloured dyes such as Indigo, logwood, madder and woad with lots of pre-dyeing. It was a fairly labourious process and it faded fairly quickly too.

Samson, gosh, I pick up information from a wide collection of sources. Fabric creation, dyeing and process information come from a variety of searches and generally are described within material craft sites. I also gleaned a great amount of information from the book by Daniel Hohrath, The Uniforms of the Prussian Army under Frederick the Great.
It has samples of cloth from the time which is useful to see the colours and weaves of the textiles used (boy were they rough for the common soldier). It was an expensive book but for me worth it.
