I don't know if is the right place to comment on a programme i've just watched on the Waffen SS but here goes anyway.I've read a fair bit about this so called elite body of men in the past as i'm 58 and definately not naive, so i know that certain irregular things happen in war ,but what got to me watching this particular programme was the smug ex Waffen SS old b******* being interviewed on the television showing no sign of remorse about what there units got up to during the war.We all know about their slaughtering of Russian men women and children but when the programme interviewed ex British soldiers with eyewitness accounts of their friends being massacared after being taken prisoners, still showing the emotions after all these years, would bring tears to a glass eye.
185 British Soldiers killed after being captured at Normandy and the massacre of the American prisoners at Malmedy makes you sick and there just the well documented atrocities
As i said before i've seen similar programmes before but watching these so called old Waffen SS veterans being interviewed ,especially the one who served with the Liebstandarte made my blood boil.So excuse me but i had to vent my spleen.

I saw the programme too - I agree that there is something wrong with these men that they cannot see the wrongness of their actions and can still take pride in them.

It is up to us to ensure they never flourish again.

"Evil men triumph when good men do nothing"

It's sad when the full scope of what these folks did on a broad scale is revealed, that after all these years they still fail to see the forest through the trees. The History Channel had a multi-part documentary on the hitler youth. There were at least some signs of remorse from former members they spoke to, with a few being unable to carry out some of the orders they were given. On the other hand is was scary to see the number that were more fanatical than frontline soldiers in the waning days of the war. I only wish larger numbers of these monsters would have been brought to justice. So Brian, vent away.~Gary

Bertolt Brecht a playwright wrote these words after Hitler was defeated

Don't rejoice in his death young men
For although the world stood up and stopped the bastard
The bitch that bore him is in heat again

How right he was!
