I'm in the process of painting Durendal's 92nd Gordon highlander but am a bit confused about the basic color of his kilt. On another website, they recommend painting the government kit in a dark blue with dark green stripes but on the box art, the kilt looks almost a dark brown, maybe like a dark version of Vallejo's English uniform (I use acrylics). Anyone have any suggestions?

Tartan: No. 3 Gordon (kilts, including pipers', bagpipe covers, ribbons & cords); sporran: white hair with 2 long black tassels
glengarry: blue, diced band

You can find alot of great tartan info on the web, too!

I am not an expert on Tartans by any means but Gary's post is the Government Sett and I am not sure that is appropriate to the Gordon Highlanders. :)

My first post has the Gorden Sett. You can search the Gordon Highlanders regimental site to confirm. :)

Well, I guess I'm only half right. My understanding is that they wore the Government sett with the addition of the yellow lines. This link has some background info on the evolution of the tartan.~Gary

I think you are right Gary. The same basic blue, light green and dark green with small black squares is the base for both. Where most of the kilts vary is by the addition of the thin repeating stripes.

I kinda surprised myself on this one... I am not much of a "rivet counter". I guess I am a "stripe" counter instead...

Thanks for the help, guys. The painting instructions that came with the figure just said to paint the kilt in the government sett, with no advice as far as colors to use. The box art looks like the govt sett with a thin yellow line added but isn't real clear. I've been trying to find the figure painted by someone else somewhere on the web but no luck. I guess I'll try to reproduce the govt kilt & hope for the best. Thanks again.

Mike, It's the Government sett with the yellow stripes as in Keith's posting. Just make the yellow lines more subdued.~Gary

Whew!! That one looks like the colors are easier to reproduce so that's the one I'll use. There's a toy soldier website, from Australia if I'm not mistaken, with step by step instructions on kilt painting. I wish I could remember the name but I'm not using my computer right now. Thanks again for the help.
