I always either have a movie, book on tape/cd or music on. I like to listen to either period music or soundtracks from a movie of the period.~Gary

I can't paint and listen to music at the same time. I have to focus on whatever I am doing in any activity and also consider it disrespectful to the music/musicians if I do not give it/them my full attention. When I'm listening to music I'm in to early jazz (to 1960). I can just tolerate Brubeck, early Miles Davis and Kenton but fusion and the stuff-passing-for-jazz today leaves me cold. My only other love is classical music, especially Mahler and Elgar. But painting and music; ne'er the twain shall meet in my studio.

i listen to music when doing anything model related.

i mostly listen to ska, rocksteady, and early 60's reggae when modeling

but when im not modeling i also listen to early punk, rockabilly, and Oi!. i cant listen to that stuff when painting though, too loud and hard to concentrate with.

Most of the time I have the History Channel or the Military Channel on while painting or sculpting. I have lissened to countless movies that I have never seen as well!

Sometimes I'll put something on the computer when Im painting or sculpting something specific. I like to lissen to Johnny Cash when working on him, and some 60's music while doing Nam subjects etc.

Howdy,
I listen to old Blues,40's and 50's. A lot of 40's big band and swing. Most of all, Rockabilly, old and new. I drive a old 53 Buick, chopped and it shoots flame so I have to listen to Rockabilly or they take away all my tattoos. There is always some Man in Black, Johnny Cash in the changer. Ryan

Ooop's, forgot the books on tape! Shelby Foote's "Stars In Their Courses" (Gettysburg campaign) 7 tapes read by the author. And Ed Bearss Gettysburg tour tape (Drive safely & obey all traffic laws  )are a must when doing CW subjects.

Marc - Sorry to disagree with you, but "Inagaddavida" is NOT a good drum solo and I say that as a drummer since 1965, playing soul, rock, jazz, but never Country.

Anything by the immortal Buddy Rich - now THAT's A HELLUVA drum solo!!!!

Anything by Dave Weckl - now THAT's a well-crafted and intricate drum solo. Weckl's a jazz drummer, debatably the best living.

In terms of rock drummers, Neil Peart is debatably the best living and the only rock drummer I know of that writes such interesting song lyrics. The best immortal - no question - John Bonham. How did he play consistently behind the beat like that, so late all the time and still sound right!!!??? I've heard drummers try to duplicate his style so many times I've lost count. Nobody can.

No offense, I'm not saying you aren't entitled to your own tastes in music and drums, Marc, but just give those guys a listen for inventive, incredibly difficult to play chops.

Dan,

You convinst me. I just downloaded some stuff of Buddy Rich and yes that man can play the drums.
But in my time  we listen to music and INAGADDADAVIDDA was for me the first drumsolo on a record i heard.
Maybe the reason is that i have nothing with jazz, except the oldtraditional jazz.
Sorry, but what i heard now from Buddy Rich and his drumbattle with Gene Kruppa well that is drumming.
BTW: i'm just a lonely electric guitar player. Just fiddling around with some note's in the bedroom and trying very hard to become Stevie Ray Vaughan

Marc

Marc - Hey, I'm just a mediocre drummer who has totally given up on being Buddy, Dave, Neil, John or anybody else but me. But I still love to play, man! There's nothing in this world better than wailing with a good band. If you ever find yourself in Omaha, Nebraska USA, bring your ax!

All the best,
Dan

I can listen to practically anything. Classical, Rock, Country and Jazz. Sometimes when I'm really into a subject, I'll put on German, French or British military marches. When working on American Civil War subjects I'll put on fife and Drum or brass band music. Movie soundtracks are cool too.

It's strange that I CAN'T concentrate without some sort of background "sound".

Jason
Me too. Add to that, bluegass/folk when working on ACW stuff (so I guess this mostly what I listen when painting. When painting Warhammer/Warhammer 40k stuff (my new passion), I love heavy metal (but NOT hair bands).

HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!

Instrumental music mostly for me--Classical (Glenn Gould, von Karajan compilations, Beethoven, etc.), Celtic (the Chieftains, Lunasa, the Clancy Bros, etc.), Bluegrass (Steve Earle, David Grisman, Mark O'Connor, etc.) Period music oddities (Songs of the Civil War, Musique Militaire a Napoleon, "Chant" when painting medieval subjects, etc.) Marches, Band music (anything by Frederick Fennell and the Eastman Winds Ensemble) always helps the mood--PIPES, when I really want to mess with the neighbors. Then the rock and roll library, all the majors, mostly those who began and flourished in the 60's The Doors, Beatles, Stones, CCR, the Band, Dylan, Van the Man, Clapton, Jimi, Carlos and of course--the Dead. But also some from the era of my own mis-spent youth--U2, Elvis Costello, REM, Bob Marley and THE BOSS. Can't paint to Zep--I wind up playing air guitar or drum with my paint-brushes. A year ago I accidentally subscribed to Audible.com, so lately I've been listening to downloaded audiobooks--I have the 12th disc of Caesar's Commetaries and the second disc of Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried cued up on my CD player now--someday I hope to discover this mp3 or iPod thing. Great topic.
Cheers

I listen to a variety of things-
Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Traveling Wilburys, Audioslave, Rammstein, Franz Ferdinand. But sometimes I get so involved in a project that I simply forget to put anything on .

It definately depends on what I'm sculpting...I do sometimes try to find suitable period music as it helps to set the mood...but I like to play anything from Antonio Vivaldi to Frank Zappa...
Last year I sculpted a couple of WWII figures and listened to nothing but Vera Lynn, the Beverly sisters, Glen Miller and some really cool broadcasts by an american reporter in London at the time of the blitz....I was glad to get the Floyd back on afterwards though... ...one things for sure...we're certainly spoilt for choice. :)

Matthew,
Not that I don't like it (the new Oi) just never got to listen to any ;)
My early stuff collection evolves around Angelic Upstarts, Blitz, Four Skins, InfaRiot and so on :)

A.
