Hi Folks

I am now thinking about replacing most of my oil paints, some of them are over 20 years old and gone hard. I would like to get a good quality set that give me a fairly matt finish and not to opaque. Price is not a major issue. Any recommendations and suppliers?

Cheers

HI mate, I use daler and rowney georgian oil paints. Cheap and cheerful I know, but they seem to matt consistently for me. I also mix them with daler and rowney artists turpentine, not the low odour variant . Hope this helps mate, any luck with a hotel for this weekend? Hardy

Hi Hardy

Thanks for the info mate, that sounds like a good start, I have several old tubes of this brand which have served me well in the past, may just replace with these.
Not sure about the weekend now, I am waiting on going into hospital this week but should find out by Thursday, if not I will travel down on Friday from work.

Cheers

I picked up some paints at Expo last summer by a company called Vasari. They're on the web somewhere. They are terrific paints. I Use Windsor and Newton quite a bit as well. Be careful of most any student grade paints. They usually lack covering power and will frustrate a painter.

I used many oil color till now but the Winsor and Newton are still the best. Best oil colors and best brushes (Series 7). Try them out if it´s possible.

I use the winsor and newton fast dry alkyds - I would be interested in other peoples opinions on these paints.

I also use Winsor & Newton oil, along with some Maimeri. I love these 2 brands and I don't change them. :)

Hi All

Thanks for you help and comments

Interesting stuff ! I purchased some Rembrandt oils a short while ago but just cant get on with them, the white is very thin and they dry up very glossy. I have always used the Windsor and Newton series 7 brushes and still do. They are or were manufactured in my home town.

Hi Tommi, in that case I suggest you pick up one or two Michael Harding paints and give them a shot, I think you'll be impressed*.

If you can't find these locally, and can't make it to London to look in one of the major shops there, then I'd order online, it'll be cheaper anyway.

There are some other high-end brands I can suggest you might like to try a tube or two of if you can shop in London (not sure about their availability online).

*There are one or two colours in the range I would avoid, if permanence is an issue to you.

Hi Einion

Thanks for the info. I have kust found an online supplier of these paints offering a 20% discount. I will order a range of colours to try out
