I am having trouble getting putty to "grip" when I want to roll out very thin "sausages". what I typically do is get some baby powder and sprinkle on a piece of tile but I find that when I start trying to roll the putty it slides along the surface not gripping making it difficult to roll with out flatting the clay. I have tried file cards (with some success) but the water I use on my fingers to avoid sticking to the clay makes a mess with the paper as you can imagine.BTW I use Aves magic sculpt.

I don't wet anything when rolling out putty into "sausages", strings, threads - whatever. I use corn starch-based baby powder and a small sheet of plate glass. I dust my thin nitrile gloves lightly and just work slowly. I use an acrylic bar to roll out thin sheets of putty on the same surface. I bought mine locally, but you can also get them from www.smallparts.com, I think. Dust the bar with powder and the gloves lightly. Roll smoothly and slowly.

Another good source for various tools is www.widgetsupply.com.

All the best,
Dan

You specifically want there to be some friction, so don't use talc (or any other lubricant) when rolling putty sausages.
