RN sailors were deployed almost everywhere at that time Ron so he could also be used as part of a landing party in the Persian Gulf (Arabian Gulf now) or around the Aden area and the Indian Peninsula, if you have anywhere particular in mind.
He would normally carry a rifle (same one as the Army) I dont know if the sword you refer to is from this figure but seamen from a landing party would carry a cutlass as against a sword and the most fiersome hand to hand weapon, the boarding axe.
They were a large part of the British occupation of half the world, but most of their work is done nowadays by Royal Marines, but usually accompanied by a Royal Navy doctor/medic. They also put heavy weapons teams ashore if the Royal Artillery were not around.
