Hi all,
I've been thinking along the lines of moving on & buying an air brush & compressor but I haven't a clue what to go for & where to get it from?
If somebody could possibly please give me some sound advice on where/which & how much, I'd appreciate it.
Cheers(y)
Jim

This will be a confusing thread for you to deal with, as there will be a hell of a lot of thoughts on this matter. Ab's are not for everyone, no matter what the attraction or temptation is. You can spend silly money on something that is not for you. ( I did). That being said, I would suggest starting on the lower price bracket, but with a reputable name! such as the 'Neo from Iwata'. There will be a lot of disagreement, on this question. My only advice is to feel your way into it, and play rather than going 'Full Monty'. (y);)

Hi Mark
Yep as you said my question will more then likely bring up many who are for AB'S & many who against AB's, so anyway it's just something I'm thinking about maybe having a go at as I paint mostly large scale figures, it's something I'm not sold on yet hence my post on the subject, anyway many thanks for your sound advice & I'll have a look at the "neo" if I do go for an AB then I don't want to spend a small fortune.

Hi Jim,

Google the Air Brush Company and give them a ring you will find them very helpful.

I've now got Mark's Iwata and 3 other airbrushes....still don't know how to use any of them. Like you I got them for larger scale figures especially a box full of 180mm Le Cimier kits that I hope to paint one day.

I think they are great tools if you are happy to commit time to the learning process. I have actually painted one figure with an old Badger airbrush about 4 years ago....now I'll have to start all over again.

Good luck I'm sure you will have lots of advice on here and there are a multitude of "How To" posts you can browse through.

I use a Paasche VL, which is a double-action, siphon-feed airbrush (the paint cup or jar attachment fits up underneath), and I use a Sears Craftsman 1 hp compressor with a 3-gallon tank. I am still learning how to use the brush, and have used it primarily on scale models, such as aircraft, armor and ships. I did use it to paint base colors on a couple of 1/20 figures, but that is as far as I have gotten with using an airbrush and figures. I have some larger anime figures, on which I want to use the brush, but I've heard of guys working in smaller scales using it, and I can't quite get my head around using it for 54mm. There is a chapter on airbrushing in andrea's "Painting Girls in Miniature", but it really does just illustrates using the brush for areas and shading.

I bought the Craftsman compressor because I wanted a compressor that could be used with my airbrush and could also be used to drive air-powered tools. Craftsman has a couple of nailers that can run off it. I wanted multiple use.

Prost!

It has taken me two years to get comfortable jus laying down undercoats with the AB :) Iwata HP - B plus is nice , I also have an Expensive Micron that I never use , just to fine a needle.
Iwata Studio compresser is also good .
While Im on this thread ; just run out of lub and thinking of using fairy liquid , what say you guys :)

You will find that washing up liquid/KY/Vaseline all dry to a powder over time. Whilst they are all water miscible (dissolve in water) that is exactly why they provide limited lubrication over a short period.
They will dry in the AB if left for a few days, so you will need to clean it thoroughly before using it again.
