You don't say which medium you're using but you might find oil paints easier because their slower drying time makes blending easier, as for the palette I use titanium white with a touch of yellow ochre a small amount of flesh can be added in areas like the belly where hair growth is thinner but don't over do it.For shading various amonts of paynes grey are added Hope this helps

thanks Peter
will use your advice when i get a chance to.I have been using titanium white with burnt umber so i will try paynes grey in the mix.

Hello mate. What I would do is not actually paint the horse white!
Paint it an off-white, and I'd lean towards mixing white with the palest brown you can get away with. Either that of paint it as a very pale dapple grey horse. By all means let me know if you need any further help whatsoever.

I use two paints for my whites (oils only!), titanium white and raw umber. This gives a nice earthy weathered tone to the shadows. I would be careful with the Paynes, it does give a nice shadow tone, but is a VERY powerful pigment and tends to take over. Most paramount though, it tends towards "blue" quite strongly. Probably better for a dapple (tend to be more to the grayish side), than a plain white horse. Anthony knows what he's talkin' about! He can certainly help. Good luck, take your time and maybe experiment on the side on a scap paper plate or a spare horse part to get just what you're after.
