you missed off viewing other peoples work - seeing work for real is something else, especially compared to photos in magazines or the web.

meeting friends and making new ones is increasingly important

I like to meet friends, and make new ones. It is very important.
Then comes the opportunity to buy some figures and bases.
And i really like to see other people's work. Then i hope to meet and to talk to the people who painted the figures of my choice to learn of them.
That's why it is very important for me to go to figure expositions.

Agree with Rob here!

Also I would like to have multiple options simply because theres not just one reason. Very fiew of us attend these shows for just one reason.

To learn and share are other aspect I would like to add as in attending seminars as well as giving them.

Cheers

All of the above...and to learn new skills and techniques. We tend to forget that if newcomers to the hobby don't feel like they're learning or making progress, they may drop out.

I used to go to get depressed looking at the standard of everyone elses work and to spend all my available cash on models and bases - now in the main it's to meet all my old and new friends.

The first reason that I would go to an expo is to meet old friends and make new ones, so I voted for this one. My second reason is that I like to compete with others, I like to compare my work with the rest of the modellers and see what I need to improve etc, also check their works, and get ideas for reference and future projects. Finally if I see something interesting at the vendors I buy it.

There were several reasons I go to as many shows as I can. One is to see and be inspired by other's work and to meet old friends and hopefully gain new ones too. Buying was another reason as the latest figures were usually on hand at the major shows.

There may be more down-to-earth reasons but the most pleasant one is to meet up with my blues brothers.

So to speak with Elwood (some changes   )

We're so glad to see so many of you lovely people here today, and we would especially like to welcome all the representatives of the Planet Figure Community who have chosen to join us here in the Exposition Room at this time. We do sincerely hope you'll all enjoy the show, and please remember people, that no matter who you are, and what you do to live, thrive and survive, there are still some things that make us all the same. You, me them, everybody, everybody.

You know people when you do find that somebody, hold that woman, hold that man, love him, hold him, squeeze her, please her, hold her, squeeze and please that person, give 'em all your love, signify your feelings with every gentle caress. Because it's so important to have that special somebody to hold, kiss, miss, squeeze and please.

Hi all!

Of course to see old friends and meet new ones, check the figures in real(it's far different by photos...)ask,learn and answer about new techniques, watch seminars...Metals are very important, too!I do not agree with my mate Xenofon(geia xara patrida!),I don't compete with noone,I just like to have my painting judged to know my level.Anyway,if I'm not mistaken,in a show, excpet the Best of Show metal, every other metal can be given independently of the number of the members who expose their jobs! The metals are important if you keep a shop and you paint for money! However, one shouldn't always depend on metals to check his level!

Cheerz!

Hey Marc,

It's 106 miles to Folkestone, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses. Let's HIT IT!

My take also is your choices are limited.....viewing others work is a major reason for me to go to a show....I take a lot of photos and am always looking for new ideas/techniques and enjoy talking to others about it for their take.
With a hobby that is inherently open to sharing, the shows are a great place to learn by open participation.

And frankly I get a real kick out of displaying my work and getting some feedback on it.

The medals are an add on from my perspective. Feels great when you get one, but not a major disappointment if you don't. Not chasing medals gives me the opportunity to experiment, which makes for all the more excitment when going to a show.

There are some car model shows in the US that are titled NNL. I forget what the NNL stands for, but they are really DISPLAY kinds of shows, no or very very limited competition for awards. These show are packed, and i often wonder if the participation at a major figure show would dramatically increase if it was a display vs competitive show.....which then puts comradery (SP) as the focus, not medals.

Personally,I go to meet and make new friends, catch up with old ones and to see all the beautiful models "in the flesh" !! My 2 cents worth. Cheers !

And frankly I get a real kick out of displaying my work and getting some feedback on it.

I'm with Walt on this. Sure I go to shows to meet up with the regular crew, and make new friends too, but I also like to show my work and get positive feedback on it. As others have mentioned, it's also good to see other folk's stuff - and it's a whole lot more enjoyable than sitting on yer arse in front of the TV (isn't it? )

Where would this hobby be without the shows?

.............hey, what's that on Channel 5?????

I'd like to make new friends, even though I tend to be a little on the quite side in new social situations, so this is an important factor as to why I attend shows.

But there is something about the competitive nature of the show that attracts me. I do not want to win medals merely for the sake of collecting awards but on the other hand, I do want to gauge my skills. Competition against the great masters in the hobby is to my mind a valuable measuring tool and can help me to see progress in my painting skills. That's why I think consistant judging criterion is so important, as it allows a truely impartial way of seeing if I've improved at all over the last year. So in a sense, I compete against myself, and I never get upset over "how I do" in the old medal category. As long as I can improve as time goes by I'm happy. If I am not rewarded by the judges, well, you can bet that I'm going to be back the next year with better figures (I hope).

The best part of going to some of the major shows is getting a chance to meet the big names in the hobby, and seeing their work up close and in the flesh. It's amazing what you can learn from just seeing some examples from the hobby's recognized experts, as well as the large number of other extremely talented painters and sculptors out there.

It's interesting to note here that the description in the thread title is "figure expo". Walt put it wonderfully about showing work and if you get a medal it's a bonus.

As an international forum peoples experiences will be different depending upon where they come from.
That's a nice thing when a show is of the "open" system and not a "1st, 2nd, 3rd" type show - that's what we dominantly have in the UK, and in my opinion, we're poorer for it.

The amount of times I've seen cursing, swearing and bad feelings erupt following the results of a show that we get in the UK is amazing. People coming away with nothing when they feel, quite rightly, they deserve some recognition for their work.

So hats off to Gerry and the Aldershot show for going with an open system, against the general will of the "old hands". It was attending a show like whereby we all came away feeling happy and it makes the rest of the experience - meeting friends old and new - all the more enjoyable.

To echo what's already been said. The main thing for me is to meet like-minded people so I can take the Micky out of them in person!

Seriously though, it's great to meet others and always great to see others' work in the flesh, as photography always takes something away.
