Here is something that I have been working on for the last couple of weeks. I am having a hard time trying to get this finished. It is the first "Historical Miniature" I have done in a while, as my interest has been mostly WWII lately. The reds and blues don't work well with my color vision issues. Any feedback you have won't hurt my feelings, there are several issues with this one so far.
Thanks for looking, Rusty

Agree with Warren. It's looking pretty good.
You could push the blue more. Don't be afraid go in with a heavier layer. Especially on the the top area. Shoulders and down a bit.

But yeah nice work so far. Face is good man.

Rocco,
Thanks for the feedback. I agree the blues need more. I will go back over the blue, especially on the sleeves.

He looks good, face is really well done. My only observation would be that both the blue and the red are very desaturated, almost grey toned (but that may be the picture lighting). Possibly look at increasing the intensity of your colours a little?

Rusty, have to agree especially as he is 54mm, that's looking really good at this stage. My one suggestion would be not using white to create highlights, it will desaturated the tonal values. For the reds use orange or even yellow and for the blues use a lighter shade of blue or apply washes or tints over the blue as it is. Love the face and leather work., damned fine painting.

Cheers Simon

Rob and Simon,
Thanks for the feedback. I agree the colors look washed out, I believe it has a lot to do with my picture taking ability. I used a flash to take the picture and it took the life out of the stronger colors. I used yellow as a highlight on the red. Next time I will try orange. The blue was a mix of oxford blue and black. The highlight is sky blue. I plan on going back and working on the blues before I wrap it up. I am glad you like the face, I feel like it turned out pretty good.

Rusty, that is a problem I suffer from, cameras and me don't get on, one day it works one day it doesn't. One of the tricks I use with both red and blue is to lay eashes and tints of the original colour over at least the highlights and often into the shade, it balances the tone. Also sometimes I cheat and use filters on the picture to bring back some of the colour, it compensates for my crap photography. Look forward to seeing your progress.

Cheers Simon

Simon,
Thanks for the advice. I thought about trying inks to bring some vibrancy to the colors. My daughter uses inks on her bust with some amazing results. I just haven't given them a try.

I have a few Games Workshop inks that I use sparingly but they tend to leave a sheen unless thinned with a matt varnish. I quite fancy looking into more user friendly inks but not sure about brands etc, jump at the chance there's nothing wrong with getting a tutorial from your daughter, I look at the work.of some of the young mini painters and go green with envy at their talent.

Cheers Simon

It looks great to me. Considering that this is a 54mm, that is a really good job on the face! The colors look good, since a soldier in the field would tend to have a slight fade to the uniform.

Most definitely worth experimenting with.
I do like using inks along with my acrylics. Great in the airbrush too.
The leave a glossy finish though as Briggsy mentions
So I usually give some matt varnish usually to knock it back a bit.

Steve and Malc,

Thanks for the comments. I am starting to get my momentum back on this one. I am looking forward to painting the gear and wrapping this up.
