You'll see a lot of posts about the "Great War" in the years to come - for me nothing sums up what this generation went through - better than this.

Brilliant writing that displays the courage and the futility of it all.

I give you Goodbyeee "The Great War 1914 to 1917"...

Comedy with a conscience.

Please free to post more video memories of the series (y)

On the subject of WW1 poignancy - Ned Parfett the newspaper seller at the time of the sinking of the Titanic?

london-newspaper-seller.jpg

Ned found fame pictured selling papers outside the White Star Line offices at Oceanic House the day after the Titanic sank, a simple task that immortalised him on film at a pivotal moment in nautical history. Ned served with the Royal Field Artillery in 1916 only to be killed two weeks before the end of the war picking up clothes from the quartermasters stores to go on leave.

To get so far - to touch history in such a way - to be awarded the Military Medal - only to be robbed of the chance of a long and happy life in the final moments of the war...

...poignant

Read more about him here at the UK National Archives
