HI all,

Does anyone have a formula to approximate the yellowish khaki of the Japanese uniform... in oils? or even in acrylics??

The uniforms that I have seen have gone the range from greyish khaki to greenish Khaki and I would like to hit on the tan khaki in between.

Violet plus cad yellow makes a pretty good start but I'm still missing it.

HELP???

Thanks,

Kevin D.

Roger,

Thanks!

That's much closer to the color I want. I have access to the Vallejo colors at the hobby shop that I frequent and the Vallejo Japanese Uniform color seems way off to what I had in mind.

Now to find a source for Andrea in this area and to start working on a combination of oils to match it. :)

Thanks!

Cadmiums are a good start since you'll definitely appreciate as much opacity as possible with yellows.

If you have a good example of Mars Yellow or another yellow earth of a similar kind it might also be a good place to begin too; you'll often find they're the most opaque you can get in this rough colour area.

...but I'm still missing it.
Can you look closely at it, try to see what's off? That's the real secret in mixing: learning to identify the nuance of something that's close but not quite there yet.

Even plotted flat on a colour wheel colour can be off in any direction - clockwise or counter-clockwise, toward the centre or out to the edge - and if it's just a small amount it's hard to see. Mixes can be off in hue or chroma and too light or dark too of course, which is a third dimension. Sometimes it can even be any combination of these, so it's no simple thing by any means.
