Hi everyone
Following on from the WW1 subject which is just about being finished https://www.planetfigure.com/threads/big-arthur-ww1-military-foot-police-redcap.642037/
Time to show what’s next ........Arthur #2
A classic sculpt from none other than David Grieve .......it is of course the Duke of Wellington , like many it’s been sat in the GA for too long so after being sent a MM magazine with a great article in it on this bust by none other than PF member MalcC
The sculpt is based on this portrait ..
Painted by Sir Thomas Lawrence 1814
Some references I will use
Wellesley as Lieutenant Colonel, aged c. 26, in the 33rd Regiment. Portrait by John Hoppner.
Wellesley in India, wearing his major-general's uniform. Portrait by Robert Home, 1804.
Portrait by Francisco Goya 1812-14
Portrait of the Duke of Wellington by John Jackson, 1830–31
Daguerreotype by Antoine Claudet depicting a elderly Wellington circa 1844
Several Nicknames ....
The "Iron Duke" related to Wellington's political, rather than to his military, career.
In popular ballads of the day Wellington was called "Nosey" or "Old Nosey".
More complimentary sobriquets, including "The Beau" and "Beau Douro", referenced his noted dress sense.
Spanish troops called him "The Eagle", while Portuguese troops called him "Douro Douro" after his river crossing at Oporto in 1809.
Napoleon dismissed his opponent as a "Sepoy General"...relating to Wellingtons Indian Service
Nameplate ready and waiting !
Currently cleaned up ....minimal as always , primed and based up .....next stop basecoating
Stay tuned
Happy benchtime
