Been too busy lately to finish anything and on top of this managed to start a half dozen figures and abandon them along the way.

Anyway, this guy from Stormtroopers finally got done today. He is my first attempt at a 120mm figure. Painting is all done with acrylics.

Lovely job Dave. Tad more highlighting on the bearskin maybe?

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks to all for the feedback on this one. Forgot to mention I was not thrilled with the original left hand and Scott at Lost Bn generously sent me a couple of spares to try.

Mike, I think it is a safe bet at least 3 of those WIP's will eventually see the light of day.

Also Steve I think you are right about the bear skin needing a little more definition. There are some very subtle dark blue highlights there but I fear they are too slight to have been effective.

Anyways, thanks again to all of you.

Dave-

The curse of the computer Dave, it shows me that the bearskin could do with a bit more highlighting. Like what you have done with his coat.
Nicely painted figure.

Don

Thanks Mike and thanks Don.

Mike, I think I was so pleased with how well aligned the eyes were and how nicely concentric I got the colored bits that it never occurred to me to push it the next step with them. I am so used to getting by with a fairly simple approach to doing eyeballs on 54mm guys so this was new territory for me. Aside from adding catchlights to them, are there any other specific bits of advice for livening up the eyes for future reference?

And Don, I may go back over that bear skin with some more aggressive highlights eventually. My intention and initial approach was to use dark blue but seems it was too dark to be apparent in this case. Any words of wisdom on highlighting hairy or dark feathered head gear are most welcome.

Thanks again guys,

DG

As an after thought, here is a better close up of eyes during preliminary stages of painting. Also, those too subtle blue highlights are faintly visible on the head gear here.

Lovely job. Did this myself with much enthusiasm and research, but rather less skill than you. Interesting about the hat. Like you, I've seen lots of pix and photos of the current one and seen the bluish sheen due to the fact that it is made (at the moment) from black bear fur. The 1854 jobby was 9" tall for ORs and 10" for officers and I believe that the fur for the latter was dyed brown bear fur. This would account for the fact that an excellent photo in Crimean Memories by Will Hutchison et al , p.29, shows a bearskin worn by an officer of this regiment, with a distincly brown cast. By a happy chance, I bought a book on this very subject from Ebay recently, and if it has anything new to add, I'll drop you an Email.

Adrian and Phil, thanks for the additional feedback. And Phil, thanks so much for the insights on construction of the headgear. This may prove very useful going forward as, in addition to this fellow, I've a number of additional bearskin toting Guardsmen in the heap that I hope to get to eventually as well.

Thanks again guys.

DG
