WIP Tambour of the Gatinais Regiment,Yorktown 1781

Here's my next addition to this great regiment.
I used a drummer already painted from the Royal Deux-ponts to start building my little regiment display.
I changed the facings to violet/purple,added a hat (built from scratch).
The head is from JMD,set #1 of heads/hands.
Is my first "mulato" renditon of dark skin which i hope i could do a good job on it.
This unit was stationed in Martinique and Saint Domingue (modern day Haiti) and for musicians the recruited natives from the island,so idecided to go ahead and try my best to render this Gallant drummer.

It's gonna be the right way.
I suggest that you lighting up his skintone. It is to black.

Marc,that is just the base color,i ised Vallejo chocolate brown and a dab of violet and a dab of black.
I will use beige/brown for lights and black for shadows which probably i would not need much of the later.
I am open to suggestions

I didn't now that. I have no clue with vallejo. I'm a oilman. So can't give you suggestions. What i now with a negro skin tone is stay away from the black. Use only dark brown's.

I think that this one will be a challenge and a learning ground for me,I like that.
My only experience with oils is painting swords,gorgets,buttons and other small pieces.

Daniel, great work so far on this and the officer . Can I ask why 18 figures to represent the regiment, is that for display purposes .
Looking forward to following.

Hi Daniel, this too looks very good so far. I like the idea of the afroamerican subject, it was common in french army between musicians. Sorry but I think the drum is upside down.

I am planning to build a 4 12x12 diorama,each with figures of different regiments that participated at the Battle of Yorktown,the 4 ground bases could be put next to eachother and form a big battle scene or be independent from eachother,but all will have to be in "harmony".
I am still debating 18 figs or 14,the officer,the flag bearer,drummer,6 fusiliers on one side and 6 grenadiers on the other side,3 fusiliers behind the drummer,officer and flagbearer.

lol,true Edu,the drum is not glued there yet,since i have to do a lot of fixing on it,but i like your attention to "oooppsss".

Finally finished.
I can tell that i am happy since is my first "mulato" face i painted,there is always room for improvement,but happy with the results.

I like it. Muy bonito Daniel. Are you sure that the top of the shoulder pad must be in the facing color too? I´m not sure, but I think this feature is only for foreign regiments.

Hola Eduardo,yes,i reserached few illustrations and on the internet before i painted this epaulettes.
i've seen both versions,bu used as an example the Osprey's French Army of the American War of Independence.
the color plate shows a Tambour of the Royal Deux-ponts ,and being a Foreign Regiment i decided to go and checked other sites.
I know the Drummers of Grenadier's units wore fringed epaulettes.

Ok Daniel, thank you for your explanation, I have the MAA series book of Osprey 244 the French Army in the american war of inependence. The color plates contains two drummers, Royal Deux Ponts and Lamark (Lamarck), both are german, but if you have the book there´s one of the Auxerrois regiment,(Page39 b/n plate) French, and the upper part of the sleeve is blue too. I personally always paint that upper part in the facing color when it is a foreign regiment.

About the epaulettes, some sources show these features for grenadiers, but it was usual too grenadiers uniforms with shoulder tabs in red.

Moreover, the turnbacks for drummers wearing the King´s livery must be white, but some sources show them dark blue.
Rigo, shows the facing color in the turnbacks too, but I suspect this is a mistake.

Once again, the information is contradictory.

Eduardo, i think i missinterpreted your post and i was refering to the epaulettes,and you refered to the upper sleeve,sorry.
You are absolutely right about that,Foreign Regiments wore the facing color on the upper sleeve,like the exaple on the Deux-ponts and Lamark.
I just realized i painted the upper sleeves cause this Drummer was originally painted as Royal Deux-ponts,i just changed the facings from yellow to purple and forgot about the details of the regimental rwegs.
thanks for point that out and as you know,i like to be as historically accurate as possible,so i will make the correction.

As for the turnbacks,keep in mind that it was a time of transition,some units were still wearing the 1776 infamous reg. and others the New 1779 Regulation.
The 1779 reg. stated that all regiments wore white turnbacks.
As we discuss this before,many sources create a lot of confusion and innaccuracies,so they leave it open to many mistakes.

Excuse me Daniel, the mistake has been mine, I didn´t use the correct term, I wanted to say the upper part of sleeve, and I said shoulder pad.

Certainly, the information about this period of the french infantry, is quite confused. As you said is a transition period, so, different versions can be possible.

Another fantastic job... each new figure is better than the last. You did a great job on the skintone. Maybe u could share your mix of vallejos for this tone ( I have a couple of black GIs from Veit Nam to paint soon).
