I've managed to get back to my work bench for a couple of sessions,i've applied some of the elements to the base and started on the painting and the weathering of the walls,i wanted to replicate a building of grey brick which seemed very prominent in victorian times,this was achieved with various shades of GW eshin grey mixed with GW black and GW ushabiti bone,when the grey areas were finished i wanted to add the yellow effect onto the walls which would create the effect of light cast by the street lamp,this was only applied to certain areas of the walls and elements which would catch the light,it was at this stage i realised how difficult this was going to be as the yellow colour had to blend with the grey walls,some areas of the yellow are darker than others as i was looking for a faded effect to the light.
the yellow effect to the walls was achieved by adding very this GW golden yellow mixed with GW ushabiti bone and applied with a tiny piece of sponge,i darkened the yellow with GW dark flesh,once all the walls were completed i finished them with oil colours from the W&N range,i decided on a dark colour for the mortar between bricks,i was going to use a lighter colour but it did'nt look right so i changed it.
I decided to add lettering to the walls which was very common on victorian buildings and i thought it would give the scene something extra,as it was a public house i chose words like ALE and STOUT which i copied from a sherlock holmes book i have.
The street lamp was completed and i added the effect of broken glass to the lantern.
The drainpipe was completed using GW black and washes of GW boltgun metal,i dded the water effect running from the drainpipe into the barrel by adding a very thin wire into the drainpipeand bent into the barrel,i then added epoxy resin to replicate the water and added some GW white to the resin once dry,i added a small paper poster to add to the scene,the barrels and bucket and rope still need more work as does the cobbled section,the cobbled section i will go back to in a couple of days with grey and ochre washes.
The reason i went with the yellow brickwork to replicate the light was because i saw some colour illustrations in a magazine of streetlamp scenes with the artist using yellow,i suppose the better option would have been to do this figure in a shadow box,but i shall soldier on and continue and hopefully achieve something like the image i had in mind when starting the project.
