    Black Watch at Waterloo

Just got around to photographing this 54mm vignette in resin from Vladimir Danilov. All the details are hand painted in oils over an acrylic undercoat. I have recently discovered the use of "Liquin Fine Detail" as a thinning agent for my oils, and it really works wonders in painting small...

    Figure paint stripping?

I have the answer! I use a product I picked up at the local hardware store called "Super Clean Degreaser". It comes in a purple coloured jug. I imagine its original use is for stripping grease off of automotive parts, but it works wonders with stripping paint and primer off of figures, both...

    Old figure made new again

My wife seems to be quite happy in her role as an agent of restraint, so I have few worries about the GA getting too big.

    Befuddled Beginner!

Hi Stephen, and welcome. I think you made a great choice, as I am a huge fan of FeR's products (no I don't work for them). The picture you included from their site is a fine example of the NMM technique. That is as far as I can tell a technique employed by artists who favour acrylics, and in my...

    Napoleon Bonaparte 90mm

Thanks everyone, appreciate your feedback. You are right Nap, Castle miniatures had two versions of this figure, the one with a hare illustrated a story of how the hare had startled Napoleon's horse as he began his ill-fated 1812 campaign in Russia, thus presenting a "bad omen". This one came...

    Napoleon Bonaparte 90mm

After a few months in the "almost finished" shelf, I finally made an end to this most excellent mounted version of Napoleon I from the talented people at Castle Miniatures. It's a pretty sizeable piece at 90mm, but the detail was exquisite. I tried a few new (to me) techniques, most notably...

    Old figure made new again

Thanks Derek. I found the whole exercise to be pretty satisfying, giving this a new look and taking advantage of the some of the lessons I've learned over the years. Helps to keep the brushes wet if nothing else. Hope you and all of my Scottish friends are keeping yourselves safe and healthy.

    Old figure made new again

The secret is to have done a terrible job fixing it to the original base at the start. After 15 years, it just pops off! I didn't start pining my figures to the base until a few years later.

    Old figure made new again

Q: What to do when you just HAVE to paint a figure but lack sufficient funds to go on that on-line shopping spree, or lack the required patience to wait for the postal service to deliver those long awaited packages? A: Get out the industrial strength degreaser/cleaner and give an old figure an...

    Northumbrian Warrior 9th century

Thanks Andrew. I have found that the best result is to be had after following a few careful steps; 1. be sure to prime the figure - ensures good paint adherence. 2. build up thin layers of metallic colour, gradually going for a gradient from dark to lightest. 3. gently buff with an artists...

    Northumbrian Warrior 9th century

Thanks guys, appreciate the comments. I have my eye on the other new release of this series, FeR's interpretation of "Ivar the Boneless" in 1/16. Ill have to wait until I replenish my supply of bases.

    Northumbrian Warrior 9th century

I really enjoy painting these 1/16 "mini-busts" FeR has put out. I have 10 of their American Civil War busts, and this one is a very recent release from the "Portraits of the Middle Ages" series. Painted in oils over acrylics, except for the helmet. That was painted with Vallejo acrylics (mixes...

    Mounted Scots Officer, Castle Miniatures

Thanks Alexandre! I also finished a 1/16 scale bust during the same time period. Once I get on a roll, the figures can really fly off the workbench. But I hope quality will never come after speed!

    Mounted Scots Officer, Castle Miniatures

Thanks Oda, his new sculpt of the Napoleonic French Lancer looks really good. I swear he's going to bankrupt me.

    Mounted Scots Officer, Castle Miniatures

Thank you most kindly one and all. I had been hoping to take this fellow along to some shows, but for now, I'll have to be content with virtual sharing like everyone else. I'm holding out some hope for Euro Miniature expo in Folkestone. Fingers crossed.

    Mounted Scots Officer, Castle Miniatures

Castle Miniatures excellent 75mm Scottish Mounted officer, which I received a few weeks ago, painted in oils over acrylic base coat. I still need to jazz up the ground work a little bit by adding some grass and plants, but other wise this is all finished up.

    Western Canadian First Nations Subjects

thanks everyone. I'm feeling pretty fortunate to have about 4 more figures in various stages of completion on the workbench at the moment, so I won't be suffering from a lack of projects any time soon. Hopefully we'll all see more finished projects posted as members put a dent in their grey army...

    Western Canadian First Nations Subjects

Taking advantage of the extended time now available for hobbies, I recently finished these two figures from La Meridiana Miniatures. The first is a bust of a Lakota Sioux warrior and the other is a 75mm figure representing a Cheyenne warrior. I used museum examples of beadwork and indigenous...
